The Life and Legacy of William Shakespeare: A Journey Through Words

William Shakespeare, born on April 23, 1564, in Stratford-upon-Avon, was a transformative force in English literature. The son of John Shakespeare, a glovemaker, and Mary Arden, he had six siblings and received his education at a grammar school. He married Anne Hathaway in 1582, and they had three children. Shakespeare became renowned for his poetry and wrote at least 36 plays, categorized as histories, comedies, and tragedies, often performed at the Globe Theatre. He also enriched the English language by coining thousands of words and expressions we still use today.

  2. Shakespeare’s Life • Born April 23, 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon • Died April 23, 1616 (his 52nd birthday)

  3. Shakespeare’s Life • His parents were John Shakespeare and Mary Arden • John was a glovemaker, shop-keeper, landowner, and mayor of Stratford • William had 6 siblings

  4. Shakespeare’s Life • John’s job allowed William to be able to attend grammar school, where he studied Latin • But, he never went to college

  5. Shakespeare’s Life • Married Anne Hathaway on November 27, 1582 • He was 18 and she was 26 • They had 3 children: • Susanna • Hamnet • Judith

  6. Shakespeare’s Life • He lived in London most of his life • Originally became famous as a poet • Wrote over 100 love poems called sonnets • Also worked as an actor, but being an actor was not as glamorous a job as it is today

  13. Historical Info • During Shakespeare’s lifetime, two people held the throne in England: Queen Elizabeth (1558-1603) and King James I (1603-1625) • The time period when Elizabeth was Queen is known as the Elizabethan Era.
