  1. Summary of IVA observed activity in and around City Hall on 5/25-5/26/2013

  2. Person over fence alert • An alert was configured to detect object passing over the perimeter fence (e.g. person climbing over fence). • The view was from a long distance and the video quality was poor. • Two tests were conducted • Person climbing over the fence • Coat thrown over fence • The person climbing over the fence was not detected. • There was no Event associated with the person, even though they were at least as large and visible as other people which were tracked. • Alert Min Size was reduced before the test, so size should not have been the cause of the missed alert • Tripwire width was set to 5, and the person stopped midway over and returned, meaning they may not have passed completely through both sides of the tripwire. • The coat being thrown over the fence generated two alerts

  3. Entrance counting notes • Very accurate with good lighting (<5% error) • Bright, no shadows, good contrast • Significant errors: • Rain (poor contrast -> 70% undercount) • Dark cloths blend into dark (wet brick) background • Strong sun (shadows enlarge people-> 70% overcount) • Improve with size tuning • BUT need to adjust with sunlight changes ! • When the venue filled • people not flow through tripwires, standstill as come in • Fix with minor view / environment changes

  4. Pedestrian notes • Court St video shows significant outbound pedestrian traffic as concert lets out Sat • Large number of Sidewalk Congestion alerts on Congress St between 7:30-8:15pm Sat. Video shows in bound traffic. • Congestion alerts at 8:55pm. Video shows outbound traffic. Note alerts less reliable due to night lighting

  5. Traffic flow summary • Court St experiences increased vehicle traffic as people arrive and leave • Assume concert goer’s vehicles since near entrance • Rarely gets congested, traffic flows well • Some increase in pedestrian traffic, but not significant • Congress St sees significant pedestrian traffic before and after concert • No noticeable change in vehicle traffic

  6. Traffic patterns on surrounding streets • Traffic was monitored on two streets in the vicinity of Boston Calling • Car traffic was counted on Court Street near the intersection with Washington. • Traffic was counted on Congress in front of City Hall

  7. Court Street Vehicle Traffic Sat AM Court St. Vehicle Traffic Concert Entrance • A distinct increase in traffic was observed on Court St. between 12:30 and 2:00 Saturday. This coincides with the official start time of the concert at 1:00, and slightly precedes the peak activity at the concert entrance. Given the long lines to enter the concert Saturday, this may indicate traffic going to the concert, or may be caused by the entrance line interfering with traffic in the area of Court St. • Zooming in , there was a significant spike in Court St. traffic between 12:20 and 12:30. • Observation of normal Saturday traffic on Court St. would be needed to confirm this data.

  8. Court Street Traffic vs Entrance Sat PM Court St. Vehicle Traffic Concert Entrance • A second surge in traffic volume was noted on Court St. between the hours of 6 pm and 11 pm. The onset of this surge matches a large surge in activity at the concert entrance that lasts till 9pm, and persists through the concert exiting starting at 10:pm. It is not known if this surge in vehicle traffic is related to the concert activity.

  9. Court Street Traffic Sunday • Traffic volume was uniformly high all day on Sunday with no obvious relationship to concert entrance activity. It should be noted, however, that Court St. traffic peaked peaked between 12 and 1 pm just before the concert began, and had an evening peak that coincided with the time the concert let out. Given the physical proximity between Court St. and the concert entrance, we can assume these are related.

  10. Congress Street Traffic 1

  11. Congress Street Traffic 2

  12. Congress Street Traffic 2

  13. People Entering • People were counted entering the concert using alerts that covered 5 entrance lanes. • Note that these numbers do not correspond to actual numbers of people. Those numbers will be computed shortly.

  14. People Entering Saturday • Large surges of people entering were noted starting about 1:00 pm Saturday, then again about 6:00 pm and 8:00 pm. • Note that these afternoon surges correspond very well to the increases of traffic on Congress street that day.

  15. People Entering Sunday • The number of people entering Sunday was significantly higher than Saturday, but there were no surges late in the afternoon. • Note that this pattern is very similar to the observed traffic on Congress St. Sunday.
