  4. Barriers to building trust • Untimely challenge • Judgement • Impatience • No respect • No empathy • Distance • identification with the humanness of the other

  5. “What do you think I am? A robot!”: Being “real” • “genuine” • “a real person” • “just another human being” • Friendly and welcoming manner • Helped the connection • Helped trust build

  6. “If it hadn’t been this relationship we would have been real good mates… Professional relationship + = emotional connection

  7. …but, there’s limits to that too because of your professionality. And they pick that up too.” Professional relationship + = emotional connection

  8. Being “real” in role • Distinct roles • Negotiated the “rule of engagement” • Focus on meeting needs • Challenge (at an appropriate time via a deep connection) • Practise life without the relationship • Support from work environment

  9. What of the supervisors? • Important role in: • the type of work environment and culture that supports such relationships • supporting and maintaining objectivity and professionalism • Modelling appropriate working relationships

  10. Summing up • Dismantling barriers to genuineness = • Build trust • a personal dimension to the relationship • a professional dimension to the relationship • support to be “real in role”
