  2. Medford PD/MADGE statistics • 2010 – 13.98% of individual drug charges involved illegal possession/delivery of prescription medication • 2011 (January – May) – 13.56% of individual drug charges involved illegal possession/delivery of prescription medication

  3. Timeline • Spring 2010 – Approached by Jackson County Medical Alliance to partner for event • March 2010 – Drug Turn-In event at Rogue Valley Mall, 456 lbs collected • DC George observed dedicated drop box at Appleton Wisconsin PD and directed staff to research purchase/fabrication

  4. Timeline • Summer 2010 – Contacted Fabrication Company in Wisconsin, estimated cost $1800-$2500 per unit • Contact made with local fabrication company and discussions about partnering with non-profit and local business partners to fund this project

  5. Timeline • September 2010 MPD and Talent PD participated in National Turn Back Event with DEA, approximately 225 lbs (121 tons collected nationwide) • October 2010 (IACP Conference) MPD won a MedReturn drug drop box, value $895 • November 2010, the MedReturn drug drop box was installed in the police department lobby

  6. Timeline • November 2010 MPD participated in another Turn-Back Event with Jackson County Medical Alliance, 190 lbs collected • April 2011, partnered with DEA and Rogue Valley Manor for National Turn-Back Event, 191 lbs collected. (188 tons collected nationwide) • Between November 2010 – this week, 320 + lbs collected from box

  7. MPD Drug Drop Box • Public Access – Police Lobby • Monday-Friday, 6am – 10pm • No Questions asked • Emptied several times a week by a Community Service Officer • Contents destroyed by Property Control Division at an approved facility

Benefits • Expired/Unused Medications out of medicine cabinet, minimizing risk of theft and abuse • Keeps medication out of waste water treatment systems/streams • Partnership Opportunities – Wastewater Treatment Operators, Refuse Disposal Companies, County Health Departments, Medical Facilities, Non-Profit Agencies • Very Popular with Public and Media • Questions?
