In 2007, SABCOHA was approached regarding a collaborative effort to address HIV in the context of the 2010 World Cup. Initial discussions with the Gauteng Government highlighted existing soccer initiatives as a foundation for action. By March 2009, SABCOHA led a formal meeting to discuss strategies and avoid ambush marketing. The CDC's involvement began with a proposal submitted for a Comprehensive Operational Plan (COP) in June 2009, approved by August. Key partnerships aimed to bolster social marketing, health initiatives, and corporate support throughout the tournament, with a focus on children's health.
