  1. Environmental Science Merit Badge

  2. History Timeline of environmental science Requirement 1 -1500s:Native American culture~the belief that we are connected to nature and that every part of nature is a second spirit -1600s:Europeans arrive~slash and burn, logging;William Penn decrees that 1 acre must be left forested for every 5 acres of clearing in 1681 -1700s:Industrial revolution begins~1762 to 1769 Philadelphia committee led by Ben Franklin attempts to regulate waste disposal and water pollution -1800s:Yellowstone, the 1st national park was created by President Grant -1900s:Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918;clean water act;river in cleveland caught fire

  3. Contributions made by BSA to env. science Requirement 1 continued -1910:BSA started -1976:BSA creates World Conservation Award -1911:forestry merit badge created -1911:environmental science merit badge -1930s:Phillips~Philmont ranch donated 127,000 acres -1952:BSA creates nature merit badge -1952:soil/water conservation merit badge -1972:fish & wildlife merit badge

  4. Define the following terms Requirement 2 -Population:total of ind. Species occupying an area or making up a whole -Community:populations that live together in a defined area -Ecosystem:a community and its nonliving surroundings -Biosphere:the part of the world where life can exist -Extinction:no longer existing -Symbiosis:a cooperative relationship -Conservation:protection of something -Niche:the role a species plays in an ecosystem -Brownfield:a contaminated area -Habitat:where a plant or animal lives and grows

  5. Requirement 2 continued -Threatened species:any species which is likely to become an endangered species -Endangered species:any species which is in danger of extinction throughout all or significant portion of its range -Pollution prevention:any practice which reduces the amount of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant released into the environment -Ozone:a layer of the earth’s upper atmosphere that is characterized by high ozone content which blocks most of the sun’s UV radiation from entering lower atmosphere -Watershed:describes an area of land that contains a common set of streams and rivers that all drain into a single larger body of water

  6. Requirement 2 continued -Airshed:a region sharing a common flu of air, which may become uniformly polluted and stagnant -Nonpoint source:you can’t pinpoint where it comes from -Hybrid vehicle:a car w/ a gas engine and electric motor, each of which can propel it -Fuel cell:a cell producing an electric current directly from a chemical reaction

  7. Construction project sample Requirement 5 The highway and bridge known as SR 520 is a connecting bridge between Seattle and Redmond. The area is environmentally sensitive because it’s home to a species of salmon that’s on the decline. It’s also an area of high seismic activity and is located near major geological faults. The project also covers wetlands and wants to expand over Lake Washington. The construction corridor is riddled w/ landfills, underground storage tanks (some leaking), and includes at least 1 heavily contaminated PCB site that is undergoing remediation.

  8. Career opportunities in environmental science Requirement 6 -LEED-Accredited -Anthropologist -Hydrologist -Agricultural Engineer -Environmental lawyer -Entomologist -Ecologist -Bioinformatics -Geographer -Climatologist
