The Color Purple by Alice Walker • This book deals with explicit subject matter and is one of the most often challenged books currently taught in public schools across the US. • The book has been challenged for its frank depiction of sexuality and sexual violence including rape, incest, homosexuality, racism, foul language and violence. • The book has won a Pulitzer Prize and is widely acclaimed to be one of the most important works of American fiction.

Alice Walker • Born in 1944 in Eatonton, GA • Parents were sharecroppers (farmers who didn’t own the land) • Was accidentally shot in the eye by her brother when she was 6 y.o and was profoundly affected by her perceived disfigurement. • This led to her to dedicate herself to reading, writing and schoolwork. • Attended Spelman College in Atlanta and Sarah Lawrence in NY

Travelled to Uganda where she learned about Africa firsthand • Married Melvyn Leventhal and became the first legally married interracial couple in MS and received numerous threats from the KKK • Published poetry, worked for Ms. magazine under Gloria Steinem • She’s an activist, a ‘womanist’, an environmentalist and works to seek change and transformation of the world

  4. TCP • The Color Purple (TCP) was published in 1982 • It won the Pulitzer Prize and the American Book Award for Fiction • It’s an awesome movie, produced by Steven Speilberg (1985) • Was adapted for Broadway in 2005

Feminist literature • the book is decidedly feminist in its presentation • In this book, the male characters are negative influences (with a few exceptions) who abuse or take advantage of the women in their lives • In contrast, the women form a community of support and love for one another • Some of the themes are 1) female identity 2) the burden of gender 3)the experience of motherhood 4) network of supportive women 5) capabilities of women 6) sexual harassment

Style and pov • The novel is written in EPISTOLARY format- letters mostly between the main character (Celie), God, and her sister (Nettie) • Provides the verisimilitude Walker was looking for • The tone is familiar, emotional, intimate and confessional • Narrative perspective is mostly first person- through Celie’s letters to God and Nettie
