  1. High magnification image of an ultra-thin section (70-90 nm) of a poly(styrene)-b-poly(1,4-butadiene)-b-poly(styrene) triblock copolymer sectioned under cryogenic conditions. A Leica EM UC7 Ultramicrotome provides preparation of semi-and ultra-thin sections. Facilities: NSEC Brings CryoTEM to UW-Madison Campus Paul F. Nealey, University of Wisconsin-Madison, DMR 0832760 Investigators previously traveled to do this work; now they use the NSEC Shared facilities leading to increased productivity. The addition of Cryo preparation instruments (cryoultramicrotome and Vitrobot) with new control software for the LEO 912 EFTEM has increased activity and research across the campus. University of Wisconsin-MadisonNSEC on Templated Synthesis and Assembly at the Nanoscale Existing LEO 912 EFTEM in the MSC now with capability for Cryo-sample work. Vitrobot: vitrification of aqueous suspensions on grids. Automated for reproductibility. Vitrified cryo-TEM specimens reveal the unexpected presence of surfactant aggregates with well-defined non-spherical structures that form “pearl necklace” morphologies Supported by NSF Grant DMR 0832760 TEM micrograph of an ultra-thin section (70-90 nm) of a triblock copolymer, cut under cryogenic conditions.
