Capacity Building Project – Aim ‘This innovative strategic pilot is designed to build capacity both individually and collectively of the South West FE College sector so that it will have much greater impact on the region’s economy, economic success and long term prosperity’ (AoC SW and SWRDA Detailed Investment Proposal)

Capacity Building Project - Background • Vision jointly developed by AoC SW, SW FE Colleges, and SWRDA • 100% sign up by College Principals • Additional support from GOSW and SW Learning and Skills Council • Autumn 2007 programme launched • 3 Thematic Groups: Regional Economy, Sustainability and College Profile • Joint SWRDA and College Principals Strategic Forum

Phase 1 – Thematic Groups and Initial Projects • Regional Economy - Impact Assessment report April 2008 • College Profile – SW Colleges Media Campaign – Employer Engagement • Autumn Conference in partnership with flybe • Membership Principals/Senior Managers from SW FE Colleges • AoC SW facilitation - Ian Munro (Regional Director) and Rachel Roost (Projects Co-ordinator)

Sustainability Thematic Group - Aims • Identify and promote the impact of SW FE Colleges on sustainability • SW FE Colleges become an exemplar of best practice • 2 broad areas of Sustainable Development • Skills: e.g. infrastructure to meet regions skills needs • Environment: eg sustainability policy for all SW FE Colleges

Sustainability Thematic Group – Current work of AoC SW and FE Colleges • Fact finding visits eg USA April 2007- examined models of good practice and links to American Community Colleges • AoC SW Chaired - SW Regional Assembly Strategic Review into Renewable Energy • Colleges working with local authorities, partner schools and LSC regional capital team to develop eco friendly buildings for the future • Best practice in the use and benefits of alternative materials • Support sustainable skills and curriculum development • National and Regional exemplars already established (eg Somerset College - Genesis Centre, Kingston Maurward College - alternative fuel project)

Examples of Sustainability Projects already underway in the SW • Cirencester College Sustainable Activities - eg Environment Group,  subsidised bus and coach service, cardboard and plastic recycling, sustainable buildings, project connected with the Carbon Trust etc • Kingston Maurward College has worked closely with Aramark (the College's catering contractors) to recycle spent cooking oil from the kitchens to power a "Green Tractor"  used at the College to teach tractor driving skills to its students. The oil is taken to Bridport TLC where it is washed and filtered to remove excess glucose. It is then returned to the College, and the tractor tank is filled up! Kingston Maurward College
