  1. What Does an Orthodontist Do? An orthodontist is a professional who deals specifically with problems of the mouth and jaw. They are generally dentists or orthodontists but may be board certified in other specialties. Orthodontics includes the entire field of dentistry which includes teeth management, diagnosis, prevention, orthodontic treatment, post-orthodontic care, and prosthodontic treatment. Wichita orthodontist is a very specific specialty of dentistry which deals specifically with the correction, prevention, and treatment of misaligned bite patterns and malocclusion, or crooked teeth. It also may specialize in modifying facial development, also known as facial orthodontics. An orthodontist treats cases ranging from minor to major orthodontic issues such as crooked teeth, missing teeth, crowded molars, gum receding, speech problems, facial fractures, bulging, overbite, underbite, face wrinkles, excessive bone growth, receding gums, soft tissue injuries, temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ), and other dental problems. Some orthodontists may perform work as general dentists or may perform specialized procedures under the authority of a board certified orthodontist. A dentist specializing in orthodontic services can perform many different procedures. A few orthodontists work exclusively in the orthodontic field while others may have general credentials pertaining to dentistry. In the south Florida area, there are many reputable orthodontists. Some of the most renowned orthodontists in the Miami area are: Dr. Ernest Kornmehl, board certified in orthodontic surgery and chief of oral surgery at South Florida Geriatric Medical Center, Dr. Idrees Suhi, an orthodontist and

  2. associate professor at the University of Miami's School of Dentistry, Dr. Sameer Chowdhry, a board certified orthodontist at South Florida Geriatric Medical Center, Dr. Zafar Ahmed, an orthodontist at Jackson Ward Dentistry, and Dr. Mary Kay Debossi, an orthodontist and director of the Cosmetic Surgery Institute in Miami. Each of these orthodontists has orthodontic specialists who specialize in various conditions. Most orthodontists provide services for the entire body. They often also do cosmetic procedures such as braces and teeth whitening. Orthodontists generally work in conjunction with other health care providers to ensure complete patient care. In some cases, an orthodontist will refer patients to general dentists for specific services. Most orthodontist practices use modern technology. Many use digital X-rays to detect misaligned teeth before braces or appliances are installed. Some orthodontists offer teeth whitening services or repair work that can be done during the patient's visit to the office. Many cosmetic dentists offer in-office services as well. For example, some cosmetic orthodontists can perform complex dental procedures such as veneers and crowns. If you have been using a traditional orthodontist for your dental needs, it is important to ask questions about their education and training. You should also ask if they are trained to handle different types of orthodontics. While it is important to choose an orthodontist who is experienced with your specific type of condition, it is also important to choose someone who is competent and has a clean record. For best results, choose a dentist with multiple years of experience in orthodontics. Ask your dentist what kind of continuing education they have to keep abreast of the latest technologies.
