  2. Self contradictory atheism自相矛盾的无神论 • The Creation.com website published the article written byChris Smith. I now quote his article below: • “Good science shows that in this world, perpetual motion machines and ‘free energy’ machines are absolutely impossible. The first and second laws of thermodynamics dictate with absolute certainty that these machines are impossible,1 and any claims of making or discovering such a machine are either mistaken or fraudulent. But upon reflection, this knowledge leads, if you are willing, to belief in our glorious Creator, God. Image: wavebreakmediamicro / 123RF Stock Photo 1/1/2020 2

  3. Self contradictory atheism自相矛盾的无神论 • “So, either way, for atheists, the universe must be a ‘free energy’ perpetual motion machine, by unavoidable definition. • “Perpetual motion machines and ‘free energy’ machines are imaginary machines that can either run forever without additional fuel, or they can produce more work, energy and/or fuel than they use.1 • “Now, the whole universe can be thought of as a kind of machine. It has moving parts, it contains fuel, it uses energy in stars and in the sun and in other ways, and it does a kind of work.2 But, for people who don’t believe that a creator God exists, the universe is in fact—as will be shown—a ‘free energy’ perpetual motion machine. Why? 1/1/2020 3

  4. Self contradictory atheism自相矛盾的无神论 • “For atheists, the universe (defined as all the matter and energy that exists, which also covers any hypothesized ‘multiverse’3), either: • “Came into being without any work or fuel or energy provided from any other source. I.e. it made all the work and fuel and energy there is. Or: • “Is eternal. In which case it is by definition capable of running forever without any energy being added from the ‘outside’. 1/1/2020 4

  5. Self contradictory atheism自相矛盾的无神论 • “Most today would opt for option 1, as they are aware that the universe is heading towards the ‘heat death’ demanded by the Second Law of Thermodynamics, which inescapably means it had a beginning.2 • “But this obviously also demands that the energy arose ‘for free’, in contradiction to the First Law of Thermodynamics. So, either way, for atheists, the universe must be a ‘free energy’ perpetual motion machine, by unavoidable definition. 1/1/2020 5

  6. Self contradictory atheism自相矛盾的无神论 • “Thus the atheist hypothesis of a ‘Universe from Nothing’4 is revealed to be no better than the futile imaginings of some misguided tinkerer, trying to harness ‘free energy’ or build a perpetual motion machine in his garage. • “If, however, you believe that God created the universe, you don’t have to irrationally believe in a universe that must be a perpetual motion machine. 1/1/2020 6

  7. Self contradictory atheism自相矛盾的无神论 • “Make no mistake; it is bad science to believe in perpetual motion machines and ‘free energy’ machines. One atheist ‘copout’ is to postulate that the laws of science are themselves not fixed, evolved somehow, or are different in other parts of the alleged ‘multiverse’ mentioned earlier. It should be obvious that by abandoning the foundational axioms of observational science itself to support a preferred philosophy, proponents of such a rejoinder are abandoning the rationale for calling their view ‘scientific’ in the first place. If, however, you believe that God created the universe, you don’t have to irrationally believe in a universe that must be a perpetual motion machine. You can adhere to the very highest standards of observational and experimental science. 1/1/2020 7

  8. Self contradictory atheism自相矛盾的无神论 • “The sometime atheist response, that this requires believing in a God who is the ultimate perpetual machine, is an obvious mistake (apart from the slight of describing God as a machine). Machines consist of matter and energy, part of the material world which God (who is spirit, and whose “kingdom is not of this world” (John 18:36) created. Science only dictates that perpetual motion machines are impossible in this material world, which is subject to the laws that God Himself put in place. 1/1/2020 8

  9. Self contradictory atheism自相矛盾的无神论 • “So the choice comes down to either having to believe in an entity that science says is impossible—the nonsensical, self-contradictory, unscientific atheistic notion of a universe that must be a ‘free energy’ perpetual motion machine, or believe in the eternal God who gave rise to the universe—all matter and energy—and instituted the laws by which it operates. • “Hence reason, logic and science lead to belief in our wonderful, mighty, glorious Creator, God!” • Thank God for the contribution of Chris Smith. 1/1/2020 9

  12. World Winding Down—a further tool for building up believers世界清盘- 建立信徒的另一个工具 • The Creation.com website published the article written by Jillene Bailey who reviewed Dr Carl Wieland’s book by the same titleon October 17, 2013. I now quote his article below: • “The Second Law of Thermodynamics is the best verified law that we have in science, and yet it is also a law that is often misused and misunderstood. It has been confusing physics students for many years, not to mention laymen. It is also frequently misused, by both sides, in the creation/evolution debate. So CMI has even had longstanding cautions against its use. But in the process, creationists have been missing out on some powerful ammunition when this law is used appropriately. World Winding Down is Carl Wieland’s response. It reflects his well-known passion to explain things in everyday terms—but without a hint of patronizing or oversimplification. 1/1/2020 12

  13. World Winding Down—a further tool for building up believers世界清盘- 建立信徒的另一个工具 If you have ever wondered about the ‘law of decay’, this is the place to find out. There are a lot of wrong ideas out there, such as saying that microbes-to-man evolution is not possible because it goes in the opposite direction to the Second Law of Thermodynamics (or 2LT). World Winding Down shows clearly and with lots of diagrams what this law is really all about. It also gives examples of how the law works in everyday life. 1/1/2020 13

  14. World Winding Down—a further tool for building up believers世界清盘- 建立信徒的另一个工具 • “If you are the type of person who prefers a little more depth to the argument, footnotes with extra scientific detail are included. If you wish to skip over them however, the meaning of the main text will not be affected. • “If you have ever wondered about the ‘law of decay’, this is the place to find out. • “Here are some of the concepts I gleaned from World Winding Down, though there is much, much more to learn and enjoy in its pages than this: 1/1/2020 14

  15. World Winding Down—a further tool for building up believers世界清盘- 建立信徒的另一个工具 • “The Second Law is the tendency for everything in nature to reach its most disorderly state. (It was interesting to consider the real reason for this, and amazing to see the way this links with loss of available energy, and the tendency for things to become ‘evened out’.) • “Things can become more ordered by themselves, if an appropriate mechanism is in place. But in the absence of such a mechanism, intelligence (transmitted, for example in the form of a program) is needed. Importantly: • “Even when something more orderly is produced, the surroundings will always become more disordered as a result. So every single process that takes place ‘scrambles up’ the universe as a whole, makes it increasingly ‘run down’. There are no exceptions to this. 1/1/2020 15

  16. World Winding Down—a further tool for building up believers世界清盘- 建立信徒的另一个工具 Yes, we can build a house, which decreases its entropy (makes it more orderly). But the ‘disorder’ produced by the machinery, power tools and builders themselves will always outweigh the order produced in the house. 1/1/2020 16

  17. World Winding Down—a further tool for building up believers世界清盘- 建立信徒的另一个工具 • “This is why we have to be careful using the argument loosely, telling evolutionists that the 2LT must be an insurmountable obstacle to biological (microbes to man) evolution. It is possible for things to become more ‘orderly’. But that is provided that somewhere else in the universe, things are pushed even further in the other direction. There is no such thing as a free lunch! • “World Winding Down shows us that the 2LT has other things to tell us about evolution however. It looks at the problems that the theory of evolution must deal with in claiming that natural selection and mutations are a sufficient mechanism to produce all the life forms we see today from single-celled organisms. It also shows the effects of the 2LT on the genome (an organism’s entire DNA code), leading to what some scientists now call ‘genetic entropy’. 1/1/2020 17

  18. World Winding Down—a further tool for building up believers世界清盘- 建立信徒的另一个工具 Also, looking at the ‘big picture’, since every process that occurs makes the universe increasingly run down, how could it have started in a more fully ‘wound up’ condition if there was no agency greater than (and ‘outside of’) the universe? 1/1/2020 18

  19. World Winding Down—a further tool for building up believers世界清盘- 建立信徒的另一个工具 • “A common mistake we can make is to claim that the Second Law only came into being with the Fall. In other words, we start to confuse the issues of decay and ‘bad’ things with natural processes like the breaking down of food. It would have been important for life to have the 2LT working right from the beginning and World Winding Down (which has been thoroughly checked and endorsed by a Ph.D. physical chemist and a physics professor, by the way) leads us through some of these ideas. • “Overall, World Winding Down, with its catchy cartoon illustrations, is an encouragement that we do not have to be afraid of diving into physics. • “The author shows us how the 2LT’s effect on energy as a whole in the universe fits with the Bible’s description of a perfect creation followed by a Fall. 1/1/2020 19

  20. World Winding Down—a further tool for building up believers世界清盘- 建立信徒的另一个工具 • “World Winding Down also looks forwards in time, to when, if God had not promised to intervene, the amount of usable energy would decrease to such an extent that we would reach the ‘heat death’ of the universe. Again a contrast is made, between the materialist view that this is all that there is, and the creation view that we can look forward to a new heaven and a new earth. • “Overall, World Winding Down, with its catchy cartoon illustrations, is an encouragement that we do not have to be afraid of diving into physics. We don’t have to be afraid of falling short in our understanding, as the concepts are put within easy reach. We don’t have to be afraid of the logical consequences either. The science confirms and supports what the Bible has to say about where we came from and where we are going. The Second Law strikingly attests to the power and intelligence of our Creator. 1/1/2020 20

  29. Thermodynamics and evolution热力学和进化 • The Creation.com website published the article written by Dr.Jonathan Sarfati on October 18, 2011. I now quote his article below: • “In this week’s exchange, Dr Jonathan Sarfatidiscusses how useful the Second Law of Thermodynamics is as an argument against evolution. David H. from the United States writes: • “I heard an example used by an atheist to show proof self-organizing systems or increased complexity by way of a naturalistic manner. This is done to support molecules-to-man evolution. The example is: As two hydrogen molecules come together with an oxygen to form water they say it is proof that the complex can come from the simple without help from God in some kind of autopoietic(?) fashion perhaps. Of course, the first question of where the two elements came from in the first place is another discussion for another time. I want to submit an article to you on this particular idea but I need to bounce it off you guys first and make sure I am heading in the correct direction before I do too much work on it. 1/1/2020 29

  30. Thermodynamics and evolution热力学和进化 • “My first reaction when I heard this was to bring up the Second Law of Thermodynamics. Indeed, complexity seems to increase but at the expense of heat loss as an exothermic reaction where some (or most? don’t remember right now) of the heat is never to be recovered again. This shows entropy of the system/universe as a whole, an enemy of their attempt to see this as an autopoietic system. Added energy later could be introduced to ‘de-organize’ the molecule, perhaps through photodissociation or whatever adds enough but I don’t know that this needs to be part of the discussion. Would the entropy of the heat/work available in the system support a refutation on the biblical creationist’s part regarding the impossibility of any system to ‘self-organize’ due to the Second Law. Am I leaping too far at this point? 1/1/2020 30

  31. Thermodynamics and evolution热力学和进化 Image Wikipedia “As water freezes, it becomes more ordered. “I may be heading in two directions at once on this since a discussion of Thermodynamics may be all that’s needed without dragging in a secondary one regarding Information Theory or something. Although I’m not sure how to apply Information Theory to the water molecule formation yet, I would like to if it fits somehow or helps the creationist refutation. 1/1/2020 31

  32. Thermodynamics and evolution热力学和进化 • “Next, I was stumped for a while on trying to decide what to do with ‘endothermic’ reactions. If an endothermic reaction borrows heat from its surroundings then it only temporarily stores heat until released by another type reaction later perhaps. Maybe like a tree? Would not a tree be something like an endothermic reaction that increases in apparent complexity from a seed to a full grown specimen drawing in energy from its surroundings, IE. the sun? 1/1/2020 32

  33. Thermodynamics and evolution热力学和进化 • “With Information Theory and molecular genetics telling us that the seed has all it needs to be a tree, it indeed then ‘borrows’ energy from the sun for a time building in ‘apparent’ complexity through a type of endothermic system. However, in the end the tree would finally give up this ‘borrowed’ energy in the form of heat exothermically by way of being burned, eaten, or chemically rotted away perhaps. This would then be an end process like the exothermic formation of a water molecule in a ‘Second Law supporting’ event, again upholding the previous idea of increased entropy in the system. • “So, do I drag in Thermodynamics, Information Theory, Autopoiesis, or what to draw up a good article on this idea of the humble water molecule? • “Thank you! • “David H. 1/1/2020 33

  34. Thermodynamics and evolution热力学和进化 • “Dr Jonathan Sarfati responds: • “Dear Mr H. • “Thanks for writing to CMI. That is quite an ambitious project you have in mind. • “This atheist is totally clueless. The reaction 2H2 + O2 → 2H2O occurs because it is exothermic, which pumps heat (Q) into the surroundings, thus by definition increases their entropy by Q/T. This outweighs any loss because of the higher ordering of the water molecules. • “Also, the order in the water molecules is based on the chemical properties of the component atoms. This is very different in kind from the organization of proteins and DNA. My response to an evolutionary science writer explains this in more detail as does my book By Design. 1/1/2020 34

  35. Thermodynamics and evolution热力学和进化 • “Endothermic reactions I’ve touched on in this article I co-authored for the homeschooling magazine The Old Schoolhouse: Scientific experiments for homeschoolers. • “I tend not to use entropy arguments at all for biological systems. • “I must admit that I hardly ever refer to the second law, although as a Ph.D. physical chemist I am well qualified to do so. Without meaning to brag, if I don’t use it, then few people should; instead, concentrate on the information argument. I’ve seen both creationists and evolutionists make mistakes in their discussions; see for example The Second Law of Thermodynamics: Answers to critics. But for a sound discussion on second law arguments, which are strongest when dealing with chemical evolution (origin of life from non-living chemicals), see the chapters from The Mystery of Life’s Origin. 1/1/2020 35

  36. Thermodynamics and evolution热力学和进化 • “I tend not to use entropy arguments at all for biological systems. I have yet to see the calculations involving either heat transfer or Boltzmann microstates involved for natural selection. Until creationists can do that, they should refrain from claiming that organic evolution contradicts the Second Law; a trite appeal to “things become more disordered according to the Second Law” is inadequate. • “Origin of first life is different, since natural selection can’t occur without two or more self-reproducing entities. • “I hope these comments are helpful. • Regards • Jonathan Sarfati 1/1/2020 36

  37. Thermodynamics and evolution热力学和进化 • “David H. replied: • “It looks like we’re on the same page! It appears that your first paragraph supports what I was trying to say in the thermodynamic sense. However, please clarify the “loss” you spoke of in the last sentence of that paragraph where you say “This outweighs any loss…” Do you mean loss of heat or entropy? • “My first need on this subject is to produce an easy response that the layman can use, which is why I thought thermodynamics would be a good start. The next level of response would be something greater and it looks like bringing in Information Theory is the place to go for that support. I have studied this to a small degree but I will refresh and add to that before proceeding it appears. 1/1/2020 37

  38. Thermodynamics and evolution热力学和进化 • “I bought big pile of stuff at CMI a couple weeks ago and didn’t get your book “By Design” for some reason, time for yet another book order! I do have “In the Beginning Was Information” by Gitt and “Thermodynamics and the Development of Order” by Williams in my library to go over as well. Thermodynamics was covered in my engineering degree but it’s been a while. • “I certainly agree that dragging complex biologic systems into a discussion of entropy would be too untenable. I was hoping to keep that part at the basic molecular level, indeed just focus on the water molecule formation for simplicity since that was what the original discussion was all about. 1/1/2020 38

  39. Thermodynamics and evolution热力学和进化 • “Dr Sarfati responds: • “It is rather daunting to laymen in general to read about thermodynamics. It might not actually help them as much as you might think; it’s different for someone like you with an engineering degree. • “The second law says that the entropy of the universe as a whole must increase, but for any considered reaction, the universe = system surroundings. So when I said “loss”, I was talking about the entropy decrease in the system as it becomes more ordered. But this reaction will be spontaneous if the surrounding entropy is increased by a greater amount when heat is released into the surroundings. Since this latter is inversely proportional to temperature, this outweighing effect will diminish. 1/1/2020 39

  40. Thermodynamics and evolution热力学和进化 • “Or in layman’s term, heating something tends to make things more disordered. The above-mentioned page http://www.ldolphin.org/mystery/chapt7.html illustrates this with a simple example of water freezing (becoming more ordered). Even in your example, at a sufficiently high temperature, the reaction 2H2O → 2H2 + O2 becomes spontaneous (dissociation). • “Since you like Dr Gitt, you might be interested in his brand new book on information theory, Without Excuse.” • Thank God for the contribution of Dr. Sarfati. 1/1/2020 40

  43. The Second Law of Thermodynamics热力学第二定律 • The Creation.com website published the article written byDr. Jonathan Sarfati. I now quote his article below: • “This article deals with three common questions about creationist thermodynamic arguments, and rebuts some common evolutionary counter-arguments: • “Open systems • “Crystals • “The 2nd Law and the Fall • “Question 1: Open Systems • ‘Someone recently asked me about the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics, stating that they thought it was irrelevant to creation/evolution because the earth is not an isolated system since the sun is constantly pumping in more energy. • ‘This does seem to be a valid point—do creationists still use this argument? Am I missing something here?’ 1/1/2020 43

  44. The Second Law of Thermodynamics热力学第二定律 • “Answer 1: • “The Second Law can be stated in many different ways, e.g.: • “that the entropy of the universe tends towards a maximum (in simple terms, entropy is a measure of disorder) • “usable energy is running out • “information tends to get scrambled • “order tends towards disorder • “a random jumble won’t organize itself 1/1/2020 44

  45. The Second Law of Thermodynamics热力学第二定律 • “It also depends on the type of system: • “An isolated system exchanges neither matter nor energy with its surroundings. The total entropy of an isolated system never decreases. The universe is an isolated system, so is running down— see If God created the universe, then who Created God? for what this implies. • “A closed system exchanges energy but not matter with its surroundings. In this case, the 2nd Law is stated such that the total entropy of the system and surroundings never decreases. • “An open system exchanges both matter and energy with its surroundings. Certainly, many evolutionists claim that the 2nd Law doesn’t apply to open systems. But this is false. Dr John Ross of Harvard University states: 1/1/2020 45

  46. The Second Law of Thermodynamics热力学第二定律 • “… there are no known violations of the second law of thermodynamics. Ordinarily the second law is stated for isolated systems, but the second law applies equally well to open systems. …  There is somehow associated with the field of far-from-equilibrium thermodynamics the notion that the second law of thermodynamics fails for such systems. It is important to make sure that this error does not perpetuate itself.1 • “Open systems still have a tendency to disorder. There are special cases where local order can increase at the expense of greater disorder elsewhere. One case is crystallization, covered in Question 2 below. The other case is programmed machinery, that directs energy into maintaining and increasing complexity, at the expense of increased disorder elsewhere. Living things have such energy-converting machinery to make the complex structures of life. 1/1/2020 46

  47. The Second Law of Thermodynamics热力学第二定律 • “The open systems argument does not help evolution. Raw energy cannot generate the specified complex information in living things. Undirected energy just speeds up destruction. Just standing out in the sun won’t make you more complex—the human body lacks the mechanisms to harness raw solar energy. If you stood in the sun too long, you would get skin cancer, because the sun’s undirected energy will cause mutations. (Mutations are copying errors in the genes that nearly always lose information). Similarly, undirected energy flow through an alleged primordial soup will break down the complex molecules of life faster than they are formed. 1/1/2020 47

  48. The Second Law of Thermodynamics热力学第二定律 • “It’s like trying to run a car by pouring petrol on it and setting it alight. No, a car will run only if the energy in petrol is harnessed via the pistons, crankshaft, etc. A bull in a china shop is also raw energy. But if the bull were harnessed to a generator, and the electricity directed a pottery-producing machine, then its energy could be used to make things. • “To make proteins, a cell uses the information coded in the DNA and a very complex decoding machine. In the lab, chemists must use sophisticated machinery to make the building blocks combine in the right way. Raw energy would result in wrong combinations and even destruction of the building blocks. 1/1/2020 48

  49. The Second Law of Thermodynamics热力学第二定律 • “I suggest that thermodynamic arguments are excellent when done properly, and the ‘open systems’ canard is anticipated. Otherwise I suggest concentrating on information content. The information in even the simplest organism would take about a thousand pages to write out. Human beings have 500 times as much information as this. It is a flight of fantasy to think that undirected processes could generate this huge amount of information, just as it would be to think that a cat walking on a keyboard could write a book. • “For more information on mutation, variation and information, see our Question and Answer pages on these topics, or Refuting Evolution. 1/1/2020 49

  50. The Second Law of Thermodynamics热力学第二定律 • “Question 2: What about crystals? • “To quote one anti-creationist, Boyce Rensberger: • “If the Second Law truly prohibited local emergence of increased order, there would be no ice cubes. The greater orderliness of water molecules in ice crystals than in the liquid state is purchased with the expenditure of energy at the generator that made the electricity to run the freezer. And that makes it legal under the Second Law.2 1/1/2020 50
