Project Background • Remote, rural communities in need of a footbridge contact Bridging the Gap Africa • Concrete bridge foundations and anchors are set into bedrock by drilling holes and setting vertical rebar. • Currently requires the use of an electric hammer drill and generator. • The objective of this project is to research, design, and prototype a manually powered impact drill that is capable of drilling through bedrock.

  5. Current State • Electric Hammer Drill + Gas Generator • Pros: • Quickly drill holes in rock • Cons • High value items which are often stolen • Complex - unable to repair if damaged • Require gas - difficult to transport to site

Desired State • Manually operated drill that can replace the electrically operated drill • Project Goals • Produce a manual rock drill that meets the needs of the client • Constraints • Disassembled, each component must weigh 50lbs or less. • Operated by 1-3 people • Simple to set up, in under 30 minutes • Compact and easily transportable • Reliable and rugged, and works on slightly uneven surfaces • $500 allowance for materials costs • Must drill 1” diameter hole, 18-24” deep

Stakeholders Positively Affected • Bridging The Gap Africa • Customer, responsible for lending out drill to communities in need • Drill Operators • Users of the drill, mainly members of the local community, will be responsible for drilling the holes for rebar • Remote Communities • Will be users of the bridge constructed with the drill in order to cross rivers safely Negatively Affected • Members of the community who make a living transporting people across the river in rafts • Their job will become obsolete and will need to find a new source of income
