  1. ACS High School Chemistry Day High School Teachers Program Green Chemistry Sunday, March 27, 2011 9AM-5PM Disney Grand Californian Hotel Anaheim, CA

  2. Sequoia Ballroom E

  3. Background Info • Tinh Tran, Science Teacher University HS, Irvine, CA • Externship: American Chemical Society High School Teachers Program focusing on Green Chemistry & Sustainability • Location: Disney Grand Californian Hotel March 27, 2011 9am-5pm • Industry Professionals: John C. Warner (Warner Babcock Institute for Green Chemistry), Amy S. Cannon and Rachel Pokrandt (Beyond Benign Foundation), Jennifer Schuttlefield (Univ. of Wisconsin Dept. of Chemistry), Clemens Heske (UNLV Dept. of Chemistry), Michael G. Walter and Qixi Mi (Caltech Div. of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering)

  4. Objectives • Learn about the green chemistry industry including principles, technologies, and careers • Incorporate green chemistry activities into the high school chemistry curriculum • Introduce green and sustainability concepts to high school students • Expose students to careers and jobs in the green industry • Increase work productivity while reducing waste, i.e. become “naturally resourceful”

  5. Prevent Waste Maximize Atom Economy Less Hazardous Chemical Syntheses Design Safer Chemicals Use Safer Solvents/ Reaction Conditions Maximize Energy Efficiency Use Renewable Materials Avoid Derivatives Use Catalysts Design for Degradation Analyze in Real-time for Pollution Prevention Minimize Potential for Accidents 12 Principles of Green Chemistry * Anastas, P. T.; Warner, J. C.; Green Chemistry: Theory and Practice, Oxford University Press: New York, 1998, p.30. By permission of Oxford University Press.

  6. John C. Warner – Keynote Speaker • How we train chemist must change • No university requires demonstration of knowledge on toxicity and environmental impact of a molecule • Environmental considerations should be inherent in chemical synthesis • Science Fair Project idea -- Sustainability

  7. Educational/Teaching Resources Screenshot of Green Chemistry Educational Resources from American Chemical Society website https://portal.acs.org/portal/acs/corg/memberapp?_nfpb=true&_pageLabel=PP_SUPERARTICLE&node_id=1444&use_sec=false&sec_url_var=region1 These are ready-to-use, green chemistry activities sorted by grade level

  8. Green Chemistry K-12 Curriculum • BeyondBenign.org • High school lesson plans • 18 Replacement labs • Make labs more green • Add toxicity and impact on environment to labs

  9. SHArK Energy Project • Solar Hydrogen Activity research Kit Project • Discover metal oxide semiconductors that can split water into hydrogen and oxygen using sunlight (carbon neutral method) • Students participate in actual research to help solve global energy problem

  10. More Resources Screenshot of Greener Education Materials (GEMs) database http://greenchem.uoregon.edu/Pages/Search.php The database contains education materials including laboratory exercises, lecture materials, and multimedia content that illustrate chemical concepts important for green chemistry. It is searchable by various parameters, including chemistry concepts, laboratory techniques, green chemistry principles, and target audience.

  11. Green Jobs/Careers Sites • GreenJobs.com • RenewableEnergyJobs.com • SolarJobs.com • SustainJobs.com • GreenJobSearch.org • Clean Edge Jobs • Careers in Wind
