  1. Data for Priority Setting in Small Doses # 4 HIV Prevention Data: Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI) PA Uniform Data System (PAUDS) 1

  2. Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI) • Sexually transmitted infections result from unprotected sexual activity, one of the risks for HIV. We can use information on populations with STIs (age, race, gender) to target HIV prevention. • PA Department of Health collects STI surveillance reports from laboratories and providers, and makes this information available to Coalitions.

  3. Sexually Transmitted Infections • For this presentation, we have merged Gonorrhea, Chlamydia, and Syphilis data for 2008. • There were 10092 cases of these 3 STIs reported in 2008 in the southwest region. - Gonorrhea (2629 cases) - Chlamydia (7377 cases) - All Syphilis (86 cases)

  4. HIV Prevention Activities • Pennsylvania Uniform Data System (PAUDS) is used by agencies contracted in the southwest region to report their activities. • Data presented are only from to those agencies that were granted State 656 funds for HIV prevention services. • Bear in mind that there are other HIV prevention services going on in the region that are funded from other sources. • The Prevention Summit on July 9th will help to inform on these other activities.

  5. Prevention Services Abbreviations • IDI – Interventions Delivered to Individuals • IDG – Interventions Delivered to Groups • HCPI – Health Communication Public Information • CRCS - Comprehensive Risk and Counseling Services • IDU – Intravenous Drug Use • Heterosex. – Heterosexual contact • MSM – Men who have Sex with Men • MSM+IDU – Men who have Sex with Men who are Intravenous Drug Users

  6. SUMMARY • Chlamydia is the most common STI. • About three-fourths of all STIs are reported in Allegheny County. • In the rural counties, Washington, Westmoreland, Beaver and Fayette have the highest number of cases. • Females are twice as likely to be reported with STI than males. • Younger age groups (15-19, 20-29) make up three-fourths of all STIs. • Blacks make up slightly over half of the 2008 STIs.

  7. Summary (continued) • From the PAUDS 2009 reports, 40 % of the HIV prevention contacts made were to individuals with heterosexual risk, 12% to MSM, 26 % to IDU and 15% to General Public. • From 2005-2009, the number of contacts made have steadily decreased; contacts made to the General Public have decreased the most. • Interventions delivered to different risk groups vary. • IDI is the most common intervention to contacts with heterosexual risk.

  8. Summary (continued) • IDG is prominent for IDUs and contacts with heterosexual risk. • Outreach is the common intervention for General Public. • HCPI is most commonly delivered to contacts with IDU risk. • Of all interventions, contacts with heterosexual risk received the most, followed by IDU, General Public and MSM.
