  2. 11 With a population of over 30 million, Malaysia is the world's 44th most populous country. Kuala Lumpur is the national capital and largest city, the cultural, financial, and economic centre of Malaysia while Putrajaya is the new federal administrative capital. Malacca is a state in Malaysia located in the southern region of the Malay Peninsula, next to the Strait of Malacca The Dutch through Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie (VOC) captured Malacca from the Portuguese in the year 1641 ending 130 years of Portuguese occupation of Malacca and renamed it Malakka and were the colonial masters for the next 183 years until it was ceded to the British in 1824. While the Portuguese built fortresses, forts and churches, the Dutch repaired and rebuilt the damaged walls of the fortresses and bastions, built new administrative edifices and residential quarters and business premises. Most of these Dutch legacies are concentrated around St Paul’s Hill and near the mouth of the Melaka River. Tourist from all over come to Melaka to visit this Dutch built city centre listed as a UNESCO World Heritage sites

  3. This tiny gate which we call A Famosa or Porta de Santiago is the last remains of what used to be a mighty fortress (one of the oldest surviving European architectural remains in the whole of Asia). It was built in 1511 under the command of Alfonso de Albuquerque. The fortress was built to consolidate their gains in Malacca after the Portuguese defeated the armies of the Malacca Sultanate. It was once made up of long ramparts and four major towers. One of the towers was a four-storey keep while the other housed the residence of the captain, officers' quarters and an ammunition storage room.

  4. Melaka Proclamation of Independence Memorial  displays records and photographs on the early history of the Malay Sultanate Set up in 1912 in an elegant Dutch colonial mansion that used to house the Malacca Club making it the social centre of British colonial Melaka. Previous guests included novelist Somerset Maugham

  7. In Malaysia, school uniforms are compulsory for all students who attend public schools. Western-style school uniforms were introduced to present-day Malaysia in the late 19th century during the British colonial era. The present design was standardized beginning in January 1970. Today, school uniforms are almost universal in the public and private school systems

  8. The Dutch Melaka Heritage Trail covers historic buildings from the Dutch colonial era. It was the Dutch era that was the longest - for over 160 years - compared to 130 years of Portuguese rule, and 155 years of the British.

  9. Ravenala madagascariensis, commonly known as traveller's tree or traveler's palm

  10. Malacca was made up of two parts during Dutch times - one was enclosed by the fortress and the other was the town area across the river. The fortress served as a means of defense for the main part of the town and its administration, while the town originally served as a place of residence and trade for the different communities living there

  14. If you climb up the steps of the St. Paul's Hill, the ruins of St. Paul’s Church are at the summit St Paul's Church was not a Dutch church, and that was not its name during Dutch times. The Dutch Reformists do not name their churches after saints. After the capture of Malacca, the church was converted to a Dutch Reformed Church for the Malacca community, and it was just called the Bovenkerk or Church up the Hill.

  15. Because of its strategic position on top of the hill, it was used as an observation point for the fort and its surrounding areas

  16. Built on the site of the last Malaccan sultan’s istana (palace), it was constructed by Portuguese fidalgo (nobleman) captain, Duarte Coelho, in gratitude to the Virgin Mary for saving his life during a storm at sea and it was originally called the Nossa Senhora da Annunciada (Our Lady of the Annunciation)

  17. Ruins of St Paul's Church On the summit of the hill the Portuguese built a church in 1521 and a larger structure in ruin now. The Dutch took over in 1641 and used the same building as their main church until the next century. The old church was then used as a storehouse but eventually lost its roof

  18. When the Dutch invaded Malacca in 1641 it was badly damaged (the belfry tower was destroyed) but the complex was later repaired and renamed St. Paul’s Church, it was primarily used as a Protestant church for about 112 years until Christ Church was completed in 1753. After that, St. Paul’s Church fell into disuse. Under the British administration, a lighthouse was built and it eventually ended up as a storehouse for gunpowder
