  2. Hobart On 24 November 1642 Abel Tasman sighted the west coast of Tasmania and named his discovery Van Diemen's Land after Anthony van Diemen, Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies. Founded in 1803 as a penal colony, Hobart is Australia's second oldest capital city after Sydney. Hobart is the state capital and most populous city of the Australian state of Tasmania.
