  2. Public SafetyDel Cerro Fire Station 31 December 13, 2005 • New station cost $4,452,898 and is 8,825 square feet. It has six dorm rooms and three double deep apparatus bays • Installed brand new alerting technology to ensure that fire fighters are notified of emergencies more effectively “Since coming into office I have lead the charge for seeing this new fire station built and moving the temporary station to Mission Valley until the time we can build a desperately needed permanent facility.”

Keep Your Family Safe Expo April 29, 2006 • Public invited to learn the latest information from a variety of experts and help families plan for any situation • We had information about: • Child ID program • Police SWAT Team • Keeping Children Safe From Internet Stalkers • Information on Emergency Preparedness Kits • Forming Neighborhood Watch Programs • San Diego Mountain Rescue Group • New Firefighter Helicopter • CERT “Our goal is to give you the tools and contacts you need to keep your family safe. If you’re like most of us, you know it should be a priority. We want to make it easy for you so you can get started today.”

Improving Our Neighborhoods • Undergrounding – Lake Shore Drive, Jackson Drive, Twain Avenue • Partnered with SDG&E, Cox Communications and AT&T “Undergrounding projects are so important to residents of District 7, especially in older communities that are crisscrossed with ugly utility lines. Removing them has such a tremendous impact on visual blight.”

El Cajon Boulevard Median March 22, 2007 • $2.2 Million Dollar Project • Median Reconstruction and Landscaping project on El Cajon Boulevard from 54th Street to 73rd Street • Funded by the Crossroads Redevelopment Project Area “Landscaped medians are part of my overall beautification goal for the communities in District 7. I ran for office on a platform of improving the quality of life in our neighborhoods and this is another example of keeping that commitment.”

Antigua Boulevard MedianOctober 19, 2006 • Construction of raised medians from Santo Road to Via Valarta that includes landscaping • Project includes medians in front of Kumeyaay Elementary School that provides additional safety for students arriving and departing school each day “I know that parents of students all breathe easier knowing we are improving the safety conditions in front of Kumeyaay Elementary School.”

  7. Sunrise Auto Repair Demolition July 24, 2006 • Two commercial buildings in the • Chollas Triangle area: • 5599 University Avenue • A 1950s “Quonset Hut” • For years these properties have attracted illegal dumping, graffiti and other physical blights. The demolition was the last step of the large-scale community clean up of Chollas Parkway in January of 2006. “This project is a culmination of a successful partnership where so many came together and persevered to see this through including community leaders and residents, the Darnall Community Council, Crossroads Redevelopment PAC, Neighborhood Code Compliance Department, Alpha Project, Casper Construction Company and the property owner.”

For Our YouthTurfing Vista Grande ElementaryJune 6, 2006 • Transformed 3 acres of decomposed granite fields into new sports fields with turf, infield and a sports track • This is one of many ball fields that have been turfed in District 7 including Kumeyaay Elementary, Pershing Middle School, Lewis Middle School and Hearst Elementary School “No more waiting. And no more skinned knees from children playing on the gravel. At last we have ball fields that our young people deserve.”

Gaspar DePortola Comfort Station November 30, 2006 • Joint-use project between the • City of San Diego and San Diego Unified School District • Provides a new, 1800-square-foot facility with a restroom, snack bar and storage area for the Little League and school physical education programs “I want to recognize leaders of the community including Mike Smiley and Bill Reschke and members of the Little League and others who had a vision a decade ago to have a permanent structure that serves many needs. I shared this vision and vowed that once in office, I would fulfill the community’s wish.”

  10. Quality of LifeSmoking BanFebruary 6, 2006 Along with Councilmember Scott Peters announced a new City initiative to ban smoking at all City parks and beaches. The measure is aimed at reducing litter, improving water quality, reducing fire hazards and improving health. Revenue from fines collected are used to off-set the costs incurred by the City for removing cigarette litter on City-owned property. “Our parks and beaches are not ashtrays.”

Town Hall Meeting: MCAS Miramar Airport SiteJune 14, 2006 • Speakers included: • Lemon Grove Mayor Mary Sessom • Councilmember Brian Maienschein • Bob Dingeman, President of the Scripps Ranch Civic Association • Representatives for Councilmember Scott Peters, Congressman Duncan Hunter, and Assemblymember George Plescia “There is an alternative and it is Lindbergh Field. If the Airport Authority had put half the effort into improving Lindbergh Field as they have to the futile effort of trying to take over Miramar, our airport problems would be solved.”

Mini Dorm Town Hall MeetingSeptember 19, 2006 • First time the issue was discussed in a public forum that raised public awareness of this Citywide issue and beginning of an on-going process to address it • Speakers included representatives from: • Mayor Jerry Sanders • San Diego State University • City Attorney Michael Aguirre • Neighborhood Code Compliance • San Diego Police Department • Land Use and Economic Development “I can appreciate that property owners have rights regarding their properties. They do not have the right, however, to create problems and lower the quality of life for the rest of the neighborhood.”

  13. Community Clean Up Days • Chollas Triangle • January 28, 2006 • Cleaned up Chollas Parkway between University Avenue and 54th Street. Partnered with our friends at Alpha Project, Teen Challenge and KGTV Channel 10News • Fox Canyon Brush Clean Up • May 13, 2006 • In the District 7 portion of City Heights. Volunteers, members of Fox Canyon Neighborhood Association and Urban Corps cleaned up Fox Canyon, Chollas Creek and Auburn Canyon • 51st Street Canyon Clean Up • Took place in May and June of 2006. • Removed homeless encampments and illegal dumps. Also cleaned up the creek which is a difficult task due to environmental concerns and removed Arrundo Donax and other non- native plants

  14. Community Clean Up Days • Euclid Avenue Clean Up • June 10, 2006 • District 7 Office sponsored the Euclid Avenue Litter Clean Up in City Heights. Fox Canyon Neighborhood Association and Urban Corps cleaned the area, picked up litter and removed weeds and debris on Euclid Avenue between Home Avenue and El Cajon Boulevard • Colina Del Sol Neighborhood • June 10, 2006 • Council District 7 sponsored Community HousingWorks’ annual event called “FaceLift” in making major improvements to 13 homes and removed trash and weeds in the Colina Del Sol neighborhood

  15. Community Clean Up Days • Islenair Neighborhood Clean Up June 24, 2006 Neighbors helped organize this event and Alliance for African Assistance helped collect reusable items to be recycled in their thrift store. Alpha Project collected trash and debris from each home in the Islenair neighborhoods “Community clean ups are an important part of our on going beautification projects in Council District 7.”
