  5. College Visits (11th and 12th Grade only) • Seniors and juniors may have an excused absence from school for the purpose of visiting colleges/universities for a total of two days per year. Upon return from the visit, the student must give the appropriate office documentation from a college official. The two sanctioned college visits will not count against exam exemptions.

  6. Attendance • Note signed by a parent or doctor is due the morning the student returns to school • Missing any class more than four times may result in losing credit for the course • EXCUSED and UNEXCUSED count toward the total allowed absences • Saturday Detention is required to make up the time missed • There is a $20.00 fee each Saturday attended for credit recovery • Truancy warning letters are mailed home after 5 unexcused absences from class **Students in the hall during class time without a pass will be escorted back to class

  7. Off Campus • Be prepared to show ID and schedule if you have an off block • Only seniors are allowed off campus during lunch • If observed off campus during lunch • Discipline referral • Loss of parking sticker

  8. Home Access Center (HAC) • If experiencing problems, please submit Parent Use Agreement form to the R-Z Office • A username and password will be manually generated and e-mailed to you.

  9. The Essentials for Junior Year!

  10. During this year You will… • Take the PSAT/NMSQT on October 12 for SAT practice and National Merit • Start your college search-You may have 2 excused college visit days this year! • Take the SAT/ACT • Keep your grades up! You send the transcript from 9th-11th to colleges!

What do you need to graduate? • Round Rock has 4 graduation plans. • Round Rock Recommended is the most Common • English – 4 credits • Math – 4 credits • Social Studies – 4 credits • Science – 4 credits • Health - .5 credit • Speech - .5 credit • Physical Education – 1.5 credits • Fine Art – 1 credit • Technology – 1 credit • LOTE – 2 credits • 3.5 elective credits

Distinguished Achievement Program • To graduate on the Distinguished plan you need to fulfill all the requirements of the recommended plan-and a total of • 4 credits in Math • 4 credits in Science • 3 credits in the same LOTE • 28 total credits • 4 advanced measures from dual credit, tech prep courses and/or AP/IB test scores, etc.

  13. Summa Cum Laude Program • To graduate on the Summa plan you need to fulfill all the requirements of the recommended plan-and a total of • 5 credits in Math • 5 credits in Science • 3 credits in LOTE • 32 total credits (2 can be local) • 4 advanced measures from AP/IB Test Scores ONLY!

  14. Grade Points • RRISD uses two types of grade points. The first type is the Total Grade Point Average (GPA). It is calculated on a simple 4.0 scale and used by colleges and universities • 90-100 = A = 4.0 • 80-89 = B = 3.0 • 75-79 = C = 2.0 • 70-74 = D = 1.0

  15. Grade Points for Class Rank • The 2nd type is the Academic Average used to figure class rank/class standing. It gives more weight to advanced classes in core subjects. Regular Core Courses Pre-Ap/AP/IB 5.0 Scale 6.0 Scale 100 = 5.0 100 = 6.0 99 = 4.9 99 = 5.9 98 = 4.8 98 = 5.8 Is the extra work worth the grade points?

  16. Top 10% Rule • YES! In the state of Texas, students who rank in the top 10% of their graduating class will be automatically accepted into the Texas Public College or University of their choice! The University of Texas at Austin only has to take 75% of the top 10%.

  17. College Admission What do colleges and universities look for? • Class Rank • Grade Point Average (GPA) • Difficulty of curriculum (Pre-AP/IB or AP/IB) • SAT and /or ACT scores • Extracurricular Activities

  18. Choosing a College Things to consider when choosing a college • Proximity-how far away from home • Size of the school • Intended major/career • Social activities on campus • Housing-what’s available • Admissions requirements (some schools require an SAT subject test or two!)

  19. It’s not too early to research! A good way to research colleges and careers is online. Try sites like: • www.careercruising.com • www.collegeboard.com • www.mymajors.com These are free ways to find out about careers, majors, and colleges.

  20. What can you do to prepare for the SAT/ACT? • READ, READ, READ! • Take Practice Tests • PSAT/PLAN tests are an excellent way to see how you will do on the SAT/ACT. Go back and review these score reports. • Go to websites for practice: • www.collegeboard.com • www.act.org • www.review.com • www.number2.com

  21. Early College Start • Take Classes through ACC here at Westwood or at any ACC campus • Earn High School and College credit at the same time for FREE (except the price of books) • Earn advanced measures in any ACC course when you receive a “B” or better for the Distinguished Graduation Plan. • See your counselor for detailed enrollment instructions. There are some admission tests requirements that must be met before enrolling.
