An analysis of more than 9.9 million students found that only those students who read15 minutes or more per day made accelerated reading gains. Students who read fewer than15 minutes daily saw below-average reading gains. Students who read between just over a half-hour and an hour per day saw the greatest gains of all.
Some researchers estimate that children learn 1 new word for every 1,000 words read.

Student who reads 5 minutes a day • 900 minutes per school year • 282,000 words per school year • 50th percentile on standardized tests
Student who reads 1 minute a day • 180minutes per school year • 8,000 words per school year • 10th percentile on standardized tests
From K-6 • 20 minutes a day = 60 days* • 5minutes a day = 12 days* • 1minutes a day = 3 days* * equivalent school days
Students in the top tercileof reading skill answered 70% more math and science questions correctly than students in the bottom tercile, even on questions with low reading difficulty.
