Enhancing Data and Scientific Capacity in Resource-Constrained Countries

Resource-constrained countries face significant challenges in obtaining reliable demographic and health data. Births and deaths often go unregistered, while health facility data provides only a partial perspective. Policymakers require comprehensive insights for effective decision-making, yet weak scientific capacity hampers data analysis. The INDEPTH Network seeks to address these limitations by promoting multi-site studies, pooling data, and enhancing networking for information sharing. The Health and Demographic Surveillance System (HDSS) provides a robust framework for collecting community-wide data, monitoring health threats, and assessing policy interventions.

  1. The data and scientific capacity problems in resource-constrained countries • Reliable demographic and health data lacking in most developing countries • Births, deaths, causes of death not always registered • Health facility data only provide partial picture • Policy-makers need more information • Weak scientific capacity for data analysis INDEPTH Network

  2. Rationale for coming together • Need for replication or multi-site studies/trials • Pooling of data facilitates extrapolation • Networking and sharing information/results • Real challenge to raise funds for their work • Lack of effective national registration systems • Need to create visibility INDEPTH Network

  3. HDSS – A viable solution • Health and Demographic Surveillance System (HDSS) – provides a fuller picture • HDSS collects data from whole communities over time • Monitor new health threats • Track population changes • Assess policy interventions INDEPTH Network

  4. INDEPTH International Network for the Demographic Evaluation of Populations and Their Health in Developing Countries INDEPTH Network

  5. Stepping stones to a vital statistics system Quality ascertainment & adjustment Vital Statistics (births and deaths by age, sex and cause) 100% Full registration 90% Sample registration(SRS or SAVVY) Coverage routine civil registration Sentinel registration(urban/rural DSS) 0% Time Health Metrics Network
