  1. The Landlady Roald Dahl

  2. Building knowledge: • Bath – city in England • Reading – train station in England • Bed and Breakfast – place where you sleep and eat Breakfast in the morning…more informal that a hotel. People will gather in the living area at night and exchange stories and read by the fire. • Pub – bar, people in England will go and socialize, throw darts and have food. • Pense/shilling - old British money – similar to a penny

  3. Chrysanthemums and Dachshund • Flower • Dog -

  4. Characters • Billy Weaver is a 17 year old boy • Christopher Mullholland is a guest at the Bed and Breakfast • Gregory Temple is also a guest at the Bed and Breakfast • The Landlady is a suspicious character and also the owner of the Bed and Breakfast.

  5. Setting • The setting is in Bed and Breakfast in Bath England. • It is cold and the Bed and Breakfast has a sign on the window.

  6. Conflict Is the main problem or complication in the story. The conflict is that Billy is looking for a cheap place to stay for the night.

  7. The Climax is when Billy looks closely at the address book and realises that the two previous guests are missing. He also notices that her dachshund has been stuffed. The Resolution is left unclear. We assume that Billy will begin to feel the affects of the poison tea and will become stuffed like the other two men. He may realise that the lady is going to kill him, but this is probably unlikely. Plot

  8. Foreshadowing • When an author hints certain plot developments that perhaps will come to be later in the story. • Think of them like clues!

  9. In The Landlady • Billy was compelled or forced to stay at the Bed and Breakfast. • The Landlady says that his bed is ‘all ready for him’. Like she has been expecting him. • The Landlady says that the previous guests have ‘never left’. • The tea tasted ‘faintly of bitter almonds’. • The landlady stuffed her parrot and her dog. • No-one had stayed there except the two men.
