  3. OBESITY, SLEEP DISORDERS, EATING DISORDERS, HEART DISEASE, HYPERTENSION, DEPRESSION, STROKE, CANCER, DIABETES CANNOT LEAVE THESE ISSUES TO CHANCE

THE ECONOMIC TRUTH IN SEQUENCE • If children don’t come to school “ready to learn” and consequently don’t finish school, the public school system fails… • If the public school system fails…all of the other public systems are overloaded and fail… the health care system fails, the mental health system fails, the corrections system fails • If the public systems fail, the drag on the economy is immense… with less skilled workers, less productivity, higher unemployment, more crime, and higher taxes to pay for higher costs to run the already failing public systems

  5. Incarceration • Cost Per Year: • 1980 = 400 million • 2013 = 1 billion • 150% Increase • # of Inmates: • 1980 = 70,686 • 2013 = 141,372 • 100% Increase Note: Population increased by 66% (six million to ten) • North Carolina Department of Public Safety

CHILDREN COMING TO SCHOOL: an education and a health problem…have to deal with in local communities through coordinated school health 2.3 million children in North Carolina 1 of every 4 children (586,000) live in poverty 209,000 children have no health insurance (go to emergency room, etc.) 853,000 children have Medicaid 23,150 child abuse and neglect victims 20,000 teen mothers 148,844 3 & 4 YEAR OLDS are not enrolled in an early childhood program. (Every Child Matters Education Fund, 2012) (KIDS COUNT, 2012)

  8. BIGGEST SINGLE PROBLEM: OUR CHILDREN FEEL NO CONNECTION TO SCHOOL…HAVE TO CREATE A FAMILY IN YOUR SCHOOL!!!

  9. SO WHY HAVE WE NOT FIXED EDUCATION AFTER 45 YEARS OF TARGETED EDUCATION REFORM??????? SIMPLE: 1) The wrong people are trying to fix the wrong things the wrong way with the wrong interests at heart 2) The “supposed to be leadership” people are trying to fix things in the wrong order …with a good faith effort 3) The right people are working really hard in the trenches, watching it all happen, and having no say

  13. ONE CANNOT MAKE ANOTHER POWERLESS AND ACHIEVE “NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND”….. …WHETHER THEY ARE A STUDENT, PARENT, TEACHER, OR ADMINISTRATOR. TEACH ME!

TEEN PREGNANCY: GOOD NEWS FOR THE PERIOD 1998-2007 OF THE 97 TEENS ELIGIBLE TO GRADUATE WHO HAD A FIRST BABY: 95 (98%) GRADUATED FROM HIGH SCHOOL(NATIONAL AVERAGE IS ABOUT 20%) 3 (3.1%) HAD SECOND BABIES (NATIONAL AVERAGE IS 50%) 97% OF THE BABIES WHO STARTED KINDERGARTEN WERE ON LEVEL (PRIOR McCOMB AVERAGE FOR OFFSPRING OF TEEN MOTHERS WAS 43%)
