Mahamaya Girls’ CollegeAlumnae Association of North America About MGCAANA: Mahamaya Girl's College Alumnae Association of North America (MGCAANA) is a voluntarily led, non-profit organization incorporated in the State of Washington in March, 2005. The association received the non-profit organization status in October 2006. Our mission: Our mission is to build, foster, and promote the unique and total growth of each individual alumnae and student of Mahamaya Girls’ College by providing a network of social, professional, educational, and cultural opportunities. Our vision: Our vision is to create a future where inspired, well-rounded, and successful alumnae, living in North America and students of Mahamaya Girls’ College, Kandy, Sri Lanka work together to benefit society.

Mahamaya Girls’ CollegeAlumnae Association of North America Ongoing Activities/Projects of MGCAANA: MGCAANA News Letter – “Maya Puwath” Published bimonthly to promote networking among members; share news about the school, alumnae living in North America, alumnae living in other parts of the world, and the Colombo Branch of the OGA; promote goodwill among Mahamayans; share recipes; share medical views; and publish current events of MGCAANA. Host and Travel Club Provides safe accommodation to students (undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral) during short school breaks and long vacations. Also assists Mahamaya Alumnae with adopting to the new environment on their arrival to the United States or Canada.

Mahamaya Girls’ CollegeAlumnae Association of North America • Ongoing Activities/Projects of MGCAANA • Continued…: • MGCAANA scholarship program for undergraduate and • graduate students • Two years in a row MGCAANA awarded two $250 scholarships to • Mahamaya alumnae studying in North America. • This scholarship is designed to provide cost of books and material • for single semester for Mahamaya Girls' College alumnae pursuing • undergraduate or graduate studies in the United States or Canada. • The Goal was to recognize alumnae who demonstrate outstanding • academic achievements and leadership abilities while participation • in extracurricular activities. They are also required to prove a • significant level of financial need. • This year’s scholarship recipients are: • Pamuditha Mahadiulwewa • Upeksha Thilakawardana

Mahamaya Girls’ CollegeAlumnae Association of North America Ongoing Activities/Projects of MGCAANA Continued…: Sponsor Disadvantaged Students at Mahamaya With the help of current members and well-wishers of MGCAANA, we were able to sponsor 22 disadvantaged students during this year as well. This money was used to pay these students’ hostel fees for the current year.

Mahamaya Girls’ CollegeAlumnae Association of North America Completed Activities/Projects of MGCAANA in 2007 - 2008: 75th Anniversary Celebrations – Commemorative Volume To celebrate the 75th anniversary of Mahamaya, MGCAANA launched this project in year 2005 – 2006. The articles were submitted by the current members of MGCAANA, past principals and teachers of Mahamaya, and alumae living in Sri Lanka as well as in other countries. MGCAANA was able to complete this project this year and The commemorative volume, A Guiding Light, will be unvailed today at the 4th Annual General Meeting of MGCAANA. Donate French books to the Mahamaya Library MGCAANA Donated 50 French books to the library of Mahamaya. The French books will be mainly used by Ordinary Level and Advanced Level students.

Mahamaya Girls’ CollegeAlumnae Association of North America Completed Activities/Projects of MGCAANA in 2007 – 2008 Continued…: Donation for the Susan G Komen Foundation MGCAANA donated $100 for Susan G Komen Breast Cancer Foundation in April 2008. Donated a Projector for the Mathematics Laboratory MGCAANA purchased a $536.90 worth Epson S5 2000 Lumen 3LCD Multimedia Projector to the Mathematics Laboratory. The projector will be donated to the school in July.

Mahamaya Girls’ CollegeAlumnae Association of North America • Activities/Projects of MGCAANA In Progress: • Mobile Library • The main purpose of the mobile library is to promote learning and support education and professional development of our members by providing opportunity and access to educational materials. • Initially the acquisition and collection development will focus on the books and non-book material (CDs, DVDs etc.) that are needed by our alumnae for standardized tests, text-preparation programs, and examinations such as GRE, USMLE, MCAT, TOEFL, SAT, LSAT, MBE, DAT, RN Licensing, etc. We will strive to provide the most recent editions of the books. • MGCAANA will invite the members and non-members to donate the • used and new handbooks, texts, etc. on those areas that were • mentioned above. We will store them in one place. The people who • need them can make a request to MGCAANA and the books can • be shipped to the requested location provided that they pay the • postal fee.

  12. Mahamaya Girls’ CollegeAlumnae Association of North America Activities/Projects of MGCAANA In Progress: • Establishing an endowment in Sri Lanka for the sponsorship program MGCANAA is in the process of establishing an endowment in Sri Lanka in order to continue the sponsorship program.

Mahamaya Girls’ CollegeAlumnae Association of North America Fundraising Activities in 2007 - 2008: Batik Project Fundraising committee organized to sell a collection of Batik wall hangings to raise funds for the organization. They raised $263.94 from the first batch of Batiks and used that money to buy the Projector for the Mathematics Laboratory. The committee is planning to expand this project to sell Batik clothing, table cloths etc. Web display:

Mahamaya Girls’ CollegeAlumnae Association of North America Membership Activities in 2007 - 2008: Contacting Members The Board of Directors and officers personally contacted all the members and invited them to attend the AGM and the dinner after the AGM. Also talked to the membership regarding renewing the membership for the year of 2008 - 2009. Facebook Account MGCAANA has opened a Facebook account in order to connect with Mahamaya Alumnae who live all over the world. This account also used as method of recruiting new members and advertising MGCAANA activities. To date there are 78 active members!!!!!
