Where Did Realism Come From? Winslow Homer ‘Artists Sketching in the White Mountains’ Realism emerged in the 1800’s. The Realist movement was created by the French Realist school who wanted to remove the Idealization of art in some movements like Neoclassicism and Romanticism.

Past and Future of Realism Romanticism Realism originated from European romanticism. Romanticism was also a French art form, the difference between Realism and Romanticism being that Realism focused mainly on middle class citizens. The official founders of Realism (The Barbizon school) were Narcisse Diaz de la Pena, Constant Troyon, Jules Dupre, Theodore Rousseau, and Charles-FrancoisDaubigny. Paul Signac Back French Painter, Paul Signac (1826-1904) trained to be a sculpture from a young age. He began studying are after viewing an exhibit of Monet’s work.

Back Sir George Clausen English Painter, Sir George Clausen (1852-1944) was famous for his works with watercolour, etching and dry paint. He was knighted in 1927. He was a ‘War Artist’ during WW1.
Stanhope Alexander Forbes Irish Painter, Stanhope Alexander Forbes (1857-1947) was a member of the Newlyn School of painters. He studied at the Lambeth School of Arts, and later went on to Mabel Spanton. Back

The Beautiful Irish Woman – GustaveCorbert “The Beautiful Irish Woman” by GustaveCorbet, is a soulful piece of realist art from the 1800’s. It shows one of the true concepts of realism, the real or natural state of the model. I believe this was a successful painting, because it shows her strong features and does not idolize her. That is what makes her truly beautiful.
Noonday Rest – Jean-Francois Millet “Noonday Rest” is the perfect display of realism. Realism is about showing people or objects in their true form. The two people sleeping show the hard their life is. I believe this work to be successful, because it has a large emotional impact.
