The 5-year Strategy for Education and Skills sets the context for using ICT to transform educational and childrens’ services Challenges Principles of reform - to reverse the disadvantage that begins in early years - to achieve excellence for all schools in achievement and behaviour - to ensure that every school leaver is prepared for the world of work - to raise the skill level of our working population - to offer access to university for all with the potential to benefit - Greater personalisation and choice - Opening up services to new providers - Freedom and independence for heads - Major commitment to staff development - Partnerships with parents, employers, to maximise life chances

Unified e-learning strategy Integrating e-systems across schools – colleges – universities enables cross-sector collaboration Cross-sector collaboration could extend the role of digital libraries into research and teaching beyond universities The role of digital libraries becomes critical to teaching and learning in e-Science and in e-Research

The unified approach seeks to make ‘personalisation’ affordable through economies of scale ~ • Teachers/trainers can share resources and build on each others’ work • Education and training providers can collaborate on choice and flexibility in curriculum and support services • It allows a ‘build once – use many times’ approach • Aggregated demand creates a more flourishing market • Learners/employees can have seamless transition and support across departments, institutions, and into other sectors

Key characteristics of an evolved Information Environment • Fit to serve all kinds of digital content • Fully supporting the submission and sharing of research and learning objects • Providing a range of meaningful, rich and innovative methods of accessing electronic materials • A collaborative landscape of online service providers working together to provide seamless access for users • Underpinned by a common standards framework (both technical and semantic)

  14. Can the e-Science agenda contribute to a Unified e-learning strategy agenda? Integrating e-systems across schools – colleges – universities enables cross-sector collaboration Cross-sector collaboration could extend the role of digital libraries into research and teaching beyond universities The role of digital libraries becomes critical to teaching and learning in e-Science and in e-Research
