Pictoralism • Photographs played the role of the photographer as craftsman and the argument that photography was only mechanical. • They made their images, using brushes to soften and blur parts of the photographs. • “It is my hope that photography may fall in line with all the other arts and with her infinite possibilities, do things strange and more fascinating than the most fantastic dreams.”- Alvin Langdon Coburn • http://www.spartacus.schoolnet.co.uk/USAPcoburn.htm • http://www.luminous-lint.com/app/photographer/Alvin_Langdon__Coburn/A/ • http://www.metmuseum.org/toah/hd/pict/hd_pict.htm
Naturalism • Naturalism had a style, it was very direct but plain. There wasn’t a lot going on mostly it just had a story to it. • Naturalism pays attention to important details, and makes them stand out. Another important part of this art is life and its view of it. Man against nature. • “A photograph shows the art of nature rather than the art of the artist” – Peter Henry Emerson • http://www.ruf.rice.edu/~fellows/hart206/18thcen.htm>. • http://www.leegallery.com/naturalist-photography/naturalist-photography-info • http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naturalism_%28philosophy%29
