  1. Essential Components for a strong Core Program. Our Purpose… To assure high levels of learning for all students! Mt. Diablo Unified School District Department of Student Achievement & School Support – Secondary March 2011

  2. 1. Focus on Student Learning A belief that all students can learn at high levels. If we as adults do not believe it…it will become a self-fulfilling prophecy. Where do we stand as individuals? As a staff? We take responsibility to ensure that all students learn. It is our belief that we can get them there. Switch from a focus on teaching to a focus on learning .

  3. 2. Create a Collaborative Culture How can this be done…. Create frequent, collaborative time during the work day. Create teams that support each other – interdisciplinary/department. How would it look if we supported each member’s daily responsibility? Create team norms/expectations. A shift from Isolation to Collaboration

  4. 3. Clearly define what every student needs to learn. Selecting Essential Standards: Endurance – knowledge and skills that will last throughout a student’s academic career and professional life (proficiency in reading) Leverage–knowledge and skills that will be of value in other disciplines (writing). Readiness – essential knowledge and skills that students need to be successful in the next grade level. Shift from broad curriculum coverage to targeted essential learnings.

  5. Why do we need to do this? According to Robert Marzano: “To cover all the content – 13,104 total hours of K-12 curriculum – you would have to change schooling from K-12 to K-22. Most schools have a “wild variation” from to teacher to teacher in regards to covering standards. ~ Berliner/Walberg

  6. 4. Constantly Measure Effectiveness Common Formative Assessments reveals.. Which students did or did not master specific essential standards? Which instructional practices did or did not work.? Was there a pattern in student mistakes? What targeted interventions are needed to support students? From summative assessments for grades to formative assessments for learning.

  7. 5. Flexible Time within the School Day Build time into Master Schedule for preteach, reteach and enrichment. Create pacing/curriculum guide schedule to provide time to reteach/enrich. Do we have 75% of our student successful at grade-level standards after core instruction? From invitational support outside the school day to support during the school day.

  8. Three Ways to Improve Core Instruction Determine student learning outcomes/objectives daily and share with students in student terms. Before teaching unit, plan one common formative assessment before teaching unit to give midway through. After analyzing that common assessment, plan one day to reteach by leaving one day blank in pacing/curricular map half way through unit to reteach/enrich.
