  1. Journal W-2 Where does the energy to power our school come from? Oil? Natural gas? Coal? Solar? Wind? Mechanical systems placed along in the ocean or along the shoreline transform energy from ocean waves into electricity. This technology is very new but we are hopeful it can help solve part of our energy problem around the world. How is wave energy like solar and wind energy? How might wave energy impact the environment?

  2. B. PROPERTIES OF WAVES

  3. Add this diagram to your journal. 1. WAVE STRUCTURE transverse wave Longitudinal wave

  4. 2. Wave Measurement-draw and label these too! Waves are described according to their • a. Amplitude (A)distance from midpoint to crest or trough; loudness • B. Wavelength ()distance between 2 similar points on a wave

  5. C. Velocity v - speed = how fast wave travels (v= λ/T)

  6. c. Frequency- the number of waves that pass a given point in one second Symbol =f / measured in units of Hz d. Period – The length of time it takes for one wavelength to pass a particular point (beginning to end) Symbol=T / measured in units of time (s) f = 1/T T = 1/f &

  7. Periodic Wave Characteristics Period (T) start end

  8. Period (T) start end

  9. e. Velocity- the speed of the wave Symbol=v / measured in units of dist/time (m/s) The speed of a wave depends on the properties of the medium through which it is traveling. v = d/t = l/T = fl

  10. Amplitude (A): measure from crest or trough to rest • Wavelength (): crest to crest or trough to trough • Period (T): T=1/f • Speed (s): wavelength x Frequency ( x f) • Frequency (f): speed/ wavelength ( s/ ) Notice speed , frequency and wavelength are all connected Formula Bible
