Population Health Perspectives Trends in the evolution of the population’s health status Trends in organizations offering prevention services Marc-André Maranda Director of Public Health Ministère de la santé et des services sociaux CHSSN March 27, 2008
Trends in the Evolution of the Population’s Health Status • Aging of the population: A problematic burden or manageable phenomenon • Poverty is stable, growing inequalities • Lack of knowledge regarding ways to prevent mental health problems, which are currently on the rise • M/F: Similar life expectancy • Youth: Concerns and many hopes
Trends in Organizations Offering Prevention Services • Social policies – globalization – economy – sharing of wealth • As opposed to traditional silos: Intersectoriality is having more and more of an impact • The very slow progress being made in carving an adequate place for prevention in the health and social services network • A note of hope: Youth and their causes (sustainable development – access to education – quality of life…) • And the communities?: More commitment and involvement???
