Origins Chinese Rock was started created by Cui Jian in 1984 He took his styles from Classic Rock in the U.S. and Britain, and combined it with Chinese folk melodies.
The Northwest Wind (XiBeiFeng) Arguably the first style of Chinese rock, became popular in the 1980’s. Combined Chinese Folk, Western tempos, aggressive bass-lines, and forceful singing. Like Punk rock in its message, the singers and groups wrote songs about their dissatisfaction with their lives, their government, and so on.
Prison Songs (QiuGe) Became popular in the late 1980’s along with XiBeiFeng, involved writing about time in prison. Compared to XiBeiFeng, QiuGe was much slower and weepier, but had a stronger message. Many “Prison Songs” used very vulgar language and bluntly attacked Chinese customs, again much like Punk rock.
Rise Of Chinese Rock After the Tianenmen square events, Chinese rock began to become embraced by the Chinese youth. Rock began to be completely embraced until today where rock is a normally accepted musical form.
