  1. The Ten Commandments Exodus 20:1-18

  2. Introduction • The LORD frees the Hebrew people from Egypt • Moses leads them to Mount Sinai • Moses climbs the mountain to receive the Law; Ten commandments are the blueprint of the entire law

  3. Highlighting some definitions • Polytheism - “no other god” • Idolatry • Historical view • People accepted one Creator • The Creator had intermediaries • Must show respect to the intermediaries • Eventually intermediaries are worshiped

  4. Highlighting some definitions • LORD’s name in vain • Swearing that a wooden object is wood – no reason for an oath • Using the LORD’s name for no purpose is forbidden • Swearing to the LORD as a part of a business deal which was not be honored is taking the name of the LORD in vain

  5. Highlighting some definitions • Sabbath • Reminder that the LORD is the Creator of the universe • Honor the Sabbath by wearing fine clothes, eat fine foods, devote the day to studying God’s Word

  6. Highlighting some definitions • Coveting • i.e. poverty-stricken man lusting to be with the queen • Wanting something you cannot have • Can lead to stealing or worse

  7. Jealous God • Katan when speaking about idolatry means an abuse of trust and refusal to give up something that rightfully belongs to someone else • Worship only belongs to God • Worship not to God causes katan

  8. For us today • The Ten Commandments is an outline for the Hebrew Scripture • We follow the Ten Commands in response to what God gives to us • The Ten Commandments is a central conviction of the faith • The Ten Commandments are a gift from God • John Calvin (1509-64), second generation reformer said: • How to live before God and with neighbors • Restrain community members from sinning • A way to please God
