Idioms • “One is your father” is based on the Gentile family structure • “One is your father, He who is in Heaven” means “you are all one family” • “father” was an idiomatic term used as an honorific title to someone you showed your highest esteem and respect (that is why Jesus refers to God as “father”)

  6. Idioms • Rabbi • Rabmeans “chief” • Rabba means “great” • Rabbi is the possessive form ofRabba • Rabbi means “my great one” or “my chief” • Rabbi is an honorific title (Rabbinic schools were not established until 200 CE)

  7. For Us Today • Do good things for God, not to glorify yourself • Do not create religious obligations that you cannot follow • All of us are equal in the kingdom of Heaven • We are of the same family with God, the Father, as our leader
