  2. Carter’s Foreign Policy • Jimmy Carter believed that America should be a part of the foreign world by • He gave back the panama canal to the Panamanians • Said that Soviet Union was a violator of Human Rights • Created an embargo on the sale of grain towards the Soviets

  3. Victory in the Middle East • 1978- Camp David Accords treaty was created and signed • Jimmy Carter helped bring together two enemy countries, Israel and Egypt. • Though successful, it created tension throughout Arab countries

  4. Mohammad Reza Pahlavi The former and unpopular Shah of Middle East. 1979- Overthrown by the rebellion

  5. November 4, 1979 Revolutionaries in Iran storm in the American Embassy in Tehran 52 people in total taken hostage Threaten to kill them or try them as spies

  6. Carters Response • Carter makes it his number one priority to get back hostages • Jimmy Carter attempts to negotiate for the release of hostages to no avail • Desert one- in 1980, Carter tries to send in several helicopters. The rescue missions fails, when all malfunctioned and one crashed

  7. Freedom~ • After much negotiation, 444 days later, the hostages are released on January 20 1981 • The day after Jimmy Carter leaves office

  8. Summary • Jimmy Carters Foreign policy- believed the US should be apart of the world • Camp David Accords- brought together Egypt and Israel • Embassies storm the American Embassy, take 52 hostage • Carters response- Negotiation and desert one • 1981- Hostages are finally released
