הספרייה הבריטית היא הספרייה הלאומית של הממלכה המאוחדת, והספרייה העיונית הגדולה בעולם. בספריה, הממוקמת בלונדון מצויים כ-150 מיליון פריטים, ונוספים כ-3 מיליון פריטים מדי שנה. הספרייה כוללת בנוסף למיליוני ספרים, פריטים היסטוריים, שהישן בהם מהמאה ה-3 לפנה"ס. נכון לתחילת פברואר 2008, הספרייה כללה יותר מ-13 מיליון ספרים, יותר מ-60,000 כתבי עת, יותר מ-9 מיליון מאמרים מ-20 כתבי עת, כ-860,000 עיתונים וכ-1.5 מיליון פריטים של מוזיקה מודפסת; מעל 100,000 פריטים של כתבי יד במוזיקה; 57 מיליון פטנטים וסימנים מסחריים וכ-3 מיליון הקלטות קוליות. הספרייה הבריטית מוגדרת ספריית הפקדה וזכאית על פי חוק לקבל עותק של כל הספרים היוצאים לאור בממלכה המאוחדת. בנוסף היא מקבלת או רוכשת ספרים רבים שהודפסו מחוץ לבריטניה. במספר הפריטים הכולל היא הגדולה בעולם (ספריית הקונגרס היא שנייה עם כ-135 מיליון פריטים), ואוספי הפטנטים והעיתונים שלה הם בוודאות הגדולים בעולם, אך אוספי הפרטים המודפסים, הספרים (שכלול באוסף הפריטים המודפסים), כתבי היד, מפות ותצלומים הם שניים לאלו שבספריית הקונגרס. גם בגודל הפיסי ובאורך מדפים כולל ספריית הקונגרס גדולה יותר מהספרייה הבריטית.
רקע היסטורי כמוסד בפני עצמו הספרייה הבריטית היא צעירה ביחס לספריות אחרות בקנה מידה שכזה. היא הוקמה רק ב-1973. במקור היוותה הספרייה הבריטית חלק מהמוזיאון הבריטי, והייתה ממוקמת באותו בניין. ב-1983 הספרייה ספגה בתוכה את ארכיון המוזיקה הלאומי. אולם רחב ידיים ששימש חדר קריאה. עם העברת הספרייה לבניינה החדש בשנת 1997, נותר האולם חלק מן המוזיאון, למרות שקירותיו מצופים בארונות ספרים עד היום הזה. האולם במוזיאון הבריטי
אוצרותיה החשובים ביותר של הספרייה, בהם המגנה קרטה וקובץ בשורות לינדיספארן (כתב יד מאויר של הברית החדשה מהמאות 7-8 לספירה), נשמרים בגלריה מיוחדת תחת הגבלות חמורות ואבטחה קפדנית. שאר האוסף מסומן באמצעות ברקוד ומספר מדף. בספרייה חוששים כי שבבים זעירים או אמצעי סימון מתוחכמים אחרים יתגלו בסופו של דבר כבני חלוף. במרכז חצר המוזיאון הבריטי נמצא חדר קריאה עצום ומרשים עם אלפי ספרים על מדפים אינסופיים. בעבר היה זה חדר הקריאה של הספרייה הבריטית. כיום נמצאת הספרייה הבריטית ברחוב יוסטון, ליד תחנת הרכבת של קינג'ס קרוס.

בספרייה חדרי קריאה רבים. הם נחלקים לפי נושאים: מדעים, מדעי החברה, מדעי אסיה ואפריקה, כתבי יד, ספרים נדירים ומוסיקה, מפות ומדעי הרוח.

The British Library A treasure house of knowledge The British Library’s collections comprise 150 million items, and rising. Its treasures span 30 centuries, and come from almost every country and language since man stopped building the Tower of Babel. They include many of the most celebrated documents and publications in existence, and countless more that are remarkable but unfamiliar: Magna Cart, the Lindisfame Gospels, the Diamond Sutra and the Codex Sinaiticus; the oldest Buddhist texts, Jewish manuscripts, the earliest printed book, the largest Atlas and the first illustrated English news pamphlet; Gutenberg’s 42-line Bible, Shakespeare’s First Folio, Mozart’s catalogue of his own works, and one of Leonardo da Vinci’s notebooks; Alice’s Adventures Under Ground’; the archives of the British Empire, secret of the Cold War, and historic documents relating to the independence of India, Egypt, Indonesia and many more countries besides; children’s board games; and the books that won the globe’s literary prizes last year.

מאוצרות הספרייה Magna Carta מגנה כרטה ליברטטום היא כתב הזכויות אותו העניק בעל כורחו ג'ון מלך אנגליה, לברוניו ב-15 ביוני 1215, בעקבות איומם לצאת במרד גלוי נגדו אם לא ימלא את דרישתם. מסמך זה הגביל את סמכויות הכתר ונחשב לראשית המשפט החוקתי האנגלי. מרגע שמלך חותם על חוזה מול נתיניו הם הופכים מנתינים לאזרחים. אי מימוש תנאי החוזה יגרום לאבדן זכויות המלך, כפי שהדבר נכון לגבי זכויות הברון. כלומר – מלך על-תנאי: אם לא ימלא את חובותיו, יאבד את מלוכתו.

But the Library’s treasures consist not just of books, manuscripts, maps and musical scores. They also include Britain’s national sound archive and philatelic collections, the world’s most comprehensive archive of patents and related material a unique collection of photographs, and the only large’ integrated national newspaper service in the word.
The first British Colonial postage stamps were issued in Mauritius in 1847. These are the famous “Post Office” issue, so called because of the inscription in the left margin. The design and colours were based upon the then current stamps of Great Britian.
