4. State Board of Education Update • On August 18, 2016, the State Board of Education approved the posting of Rule 160-5-1-.15 AWARDING UNITS OF CREDIT AND ACCEPTANCE OF TRANSFER CREDIT AND/OR GRADES for 30 days of public review and comment. • This rule is being amended to include an updated definition of accredited schools, updated assessment (Milestone) language, and updated titles of high school mathematics courses. State Board of Education Adopts Rule Amendments 160-4-4-.10 INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS SELECTION AND RECOMMENDATION.Rule was amended in compliance with House Bill 739 from the 2016 legislative session. Rule title was amended to read Instructional Materials Selection and Recommendation to align with the wording in O.C.G.A. § 20-2-1010.  As stated in O.C.G.A. § 20-2-1012, the state recommendation process for instructional materials and content becomes optional by changing the wording from shall to may. Amendments provided that “locally approved instructional materials and content” will require a review and recommendation process, provide for public review of proposed and approved instructional materials and content, and provides for the designation of a school system coordinator. State Board of Education Adopts Rule Amendments 160-4-4-.20 INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS ADVISORY COMMITTEE.  Rule was amended in compliance with House Bill 739 from the 2016 legislative session.  Rule title was amended to Instructional Materials Advisory Committee to align with O.C.G.A. § 20-2-1010. As stated in O.C.G.A. § 20-2-1012, the state recommendation process for instructional materials and content becomes optional by changing the wording from shall to may.   If the State Board of Education elects to provide for state approved instructional materials and content, the State Board of Education shall establish a review and recommendation process in accordance with O.C.G.A. § 20-2-1012 section two; and the State Board of Education may select a committee or committees to examine instructional materials and content. 10. Fine Arts Diploma Seal

Objectives • The creative industries are a 29 billion dollar sector in Georgia’s economy employing more than 200,000 artists, actors, dancers, musicians and arts administrators. • The goal of this seal is to create students who are prepared for college and careers in these fine arts related industries. • It is a signal to employers and higher education institutions that a student is prepared to participate in Georgia’s robust Creative Industries sector.

International Skills Diploma Seal Application Open Applications to become eligible to award the International Skills Diploma Seal to graduating high school students are now being accepted until December 15, 2016. Schools that were approved in February do not need to apply again. Science – Move On When Ready • Science courses assigned to a dual enrollment number can count as the 4th science for high school graduation credit. • For a college course that has been aligned to a high school course, institutions can request the college course to be also assigned a dual enrollment number. • When a college course is aligned to both an actual high school course number and a dual enrollment number, the high school should: • Always give the student credit for the actual high school course as long as the student has not previously taken that course • Give the student credit for the college course by using the dual enrollment number if the student has previously taken the high school course Contact Juan-Carlos Aguilar at jaguilar@doe.k12.ga.us
