    1. 1 Tobacco & Women’s Health Here Is Some Info On How Tobacco Use Affects Your Health And The Health Of Your Family

    2. 2 Death And Disability Half of all tobacco users are dead by age 55! 43,000 kids are orphaned each year due to tobacco related deaths of their parents. There are over 6,000 deaths every year in the US of children under age 5 that are directly related to second hand smoke.

    3. 3 Tobacco & Reproductive Health 30% lower fertility rates than non-smokers. Higher rates if pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). Double the risk of ectopic or tubal pregnancy. 80% higher risk of miscarriage. 1 in 10 miscarriages are due to tobacco use. Higher rates of preterm labor and early rupture of membranes. Damages the placenta causing lower birth weight babies & smaller brain size. Low birth weight is also caused by the dad smoking. Higher rates of cleft lip and palate in babies whose mothers smoke. Higher rates of aggressive behavior in kids. Higher rates of learning disabilities and autism. Higher rates of ADHD in kids whose moms use tobacco.

    4. 4 Tobacco & Reproductive Health Higher rates of increased startle reflex (i.e. They are jumpier and more easily started). Decreased IQ scores. More likely to repeat a grade in the early school years. Higher rates of asthma and other lung diseases in children whose mothers smoked while pregnant. Higher rates of respiratory tract infections such as bronchitis and pneumonia. Reduced lung function and impaired lung growth. Labored breathing as they grow up including wheezing, phlegm and coughing. Damage to the child’s immune system. Increase in infections in the child’s mouth. Loss of hearing of softer sounds and unable to pick out sounds from background noise and remember them. The babies have sleep disorders.

    5. 5 Tobacco & Reproductive Health Higher rates of adult onset diabetes and obesity in kids whose moms used tobacco. Congenital limb reduction and club foot. When a pregnant woman uses tobacco, it adds nearly $1,000 to the overall costs of her prenatal and neonatal care. Four times more babies die to mothers who smoked while pregnant than to those who did not smoke while pregnant. When a baby is born to a pregnant smoker, her baby goes through cold turkey for the first few weeks of life. When a baby is born to a pregnant smoker, the baby’s brain is already hard wired for nicotine addiction because of the nicotine that passes across the placenta and into the baby’s brain. Lower sperm counts & higher rates of testicular cancer in male offspring of women who use tobacco while pregnant. Smaller head size until at least age five. Causes gestational diabetes in women who smoke.

    6. 6 SIDS Tobacco use - both directly and as second hand smoke - is one of the leading causes of sudden infant death syndrome. If tobacco use were eliminated as a cause, it would decrease the number of SID’s deaths by at least 1/3. There are 2,300 SID’s deaths in the US every year that are due to second hand tobacco smoke alone. 1 in 10 deaths in infants under 1 year of age are tobacco related. Tobacco use in the home doubles the risk of SID’s.

    7. 7 Breastfeeding & Tobacco Addiction Atherosclerosis Middle ear infections Less breast milk Destruction of brain cells Colic Circulatory damage Chronic depression Unable to initiate feeding SIDS Decreased ability to learn Increased respiratory infections Increase in brain receptors for nicotine

    8. 8 Tobacco & Cancer Bladder. Breast (?). Kidney. Lung. Mouth & lip. Pharynx & larynx (especially if you drink alcohol also). Oral (especially if you drink alcohol also). Nasal. Ovarian (?). Endometrial (?). Cervix & vulva. Colorectal. Esophagus (especially if you drink alcohol also). Stomach (men 9x, women 2x). Liver (especially if you drink alcohol or have been exposed to hepatitis). Pancreas. Acute myeloid leukemia.

    9. 9 Lung Cancer & Lung Diseases Lung cancer is the leading cancer death in the US for both men and women. 1 in 5 women who smoke will develop lung cancer, at a younger age than men and after smoking fewer cig’s. Lung cancer in women has risen 600% from 1930-97. 90% of all lung cancer deaths are due to tobacco use, the remaining 10% are due to second hand smoke and chemicals such as asbestos. 5 year survival rates for lung cancer are only 15%. “Lite” cigarettes increase the risk of lung cancer because you inhale more deeply and take the tar deeper into your lungs. Asthma. Emphysema. Bronchitis. Pneumonia. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Coughing. Mucus production. Wheezing.

    10. 10 Heart & Cardiovascular Diseases Aortic aneurysm. Heart attack & heart disease. Hypertension. People who use tobacco and caffeine together have more than double the risk of high blood pressure – i.e.. Your coffee and cig in the morning is killing you!). Phlebitis. Atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries). Coronary heart disease. Sudden death (especially in men). Stroke (women who smoke and take oral contraceptives have a 25 x higher risk of stroke & 50x higher risk of heart attack). Women in their 30’s who use tobacco are 5.3x more likely to have a heart attack than a non-tobacco user.

    11. 11 Other Diseases Cataracts. Macular degeneration (both kinds). Causes night blindness. Depression. Anxiety disorders. Male impotency (2x) (even higher if you both smoke AND drink!). Multiple sclerosis. Apple shape body fat. Loss of immune function. Brain damage, especially when mixed with alcohol. Periodontitis. Dental root damage. Makes lupus worse. Peptic ulcers. Rheumatoid arthritis. Decreases your mental ability and IQ. Arthritis. Worsens psoriasis. Spinal disc damage. Snoring. Hearing loss. Hip fractures. Peptic ulcers. Crohn’s disease & colitis. Memory loss in middle age. Wound infection 6x greater. Delayed wound healing. Colon polyps. Type II diabetes (both as a cause and tobacco use makes diabetes worse as well). Graves disease (a thyroid disease). Menstrual disorders in women who use tobacco. Early and worse menopause in smokers. Osteoporosis. Gall stones.

    12. 12 Second Hand Smoke There are more toxic and cancer causing chemicals in second hand smoke, then there are in main stream smoke. More than half of the smoke created by a cigarette is second hand smoke – including exhaled mainstream smoke. 3,000 adult lung cancer deaths per year due to second hand smoke, 50,000 total deaths (cancer, heart disease, etc). 300,000 hospital admissions for kids under 18 months due to respiratory and ear infections. Increases in the number of asthma attacks and severity of symptoms in up to 1 million children with asthma. Ingestion of more than 1 cigarette or 3 cigarette butts can cause serious symptoms in a toddler.

    13. 13 Second Hand Smoke If You Smoke Anywhere Around Other People - You Are Causing: Asthma. Bronchitis. Cough. Impaired breathing. Sore throats. Wheezing. Inner ear damage. Pneumonia. Colic. Tooth decay. Lung cancer. Breast cancer. Atherosclerosis. Infertility. Cervical cancer. Childhood brain tumors when the dad smokes. High cholesterol. Faster blood clotting. Allergies. Sinus cancer. Phlegm. Adenoid disease. Snoring. Tonsillitis. Heart disease. Lung disease. Sinusitis, Meningitis. Worsening of cystic fibrosis. Ear infections. Mouth infections. Menstrual disorders. Early menopause. Lymphoma. Childhood leukemia when the dad smokes. Stroke.

    14. 14 Second Hand Smoke Even if you smoke outdoors……. Your kids are still exposed to the chemicals in tobacco and will have 3 times the level of tobacco byproducts in their bodies than kids in families where neither parent smokes at all. Exposure to any level of second hand smoke can contribute to the health risks from second hand smoke. If you use tobacco anywhere around your child, they are learning to use tobacco from you. The sooner you give up tobacco, the less likely your kids are to ever start using tobacco. Kids in smoking households miss four times more school than non-tobacco homes.

    15. 15 Second Hand Smoke In California Causes: 5,500 heart disease deaths 1,600 low birth weight babies 52,000 ear infections 36,000 lower respiratory infections 3,100 NEW cases of asthma 31,000 cases of asthma made worse 21 SIDS deaths 1,100 cases of lung cancer > 1,100 cases of sinus cancer

    16. 16 People who earn less money per year, actually spend MORE on tobacco per year when viewed as a portion of their income. If 1 pack/day = $2,200/ year, then… You also spend more on insurance, health care, wear and tear of clothing & furniture, out of pocket health care, etc. You save less money as it is going into tobacco, insurance, etc. You fall more and more behind every year when compared to people your own age – increasing the amount of stress you feel over financial stress.
