  2. Culture Clothing: -children wear casual clothes -adults (businessmen) wear suits and ties -kimonos are long sleeved robes that are secured with a sash around the waist called an obi -kimonos were once worn regularly but now are only worn on special occasions

Culture Music: -symphonic and ballet are common music types -pop music is vastly popular -Gagaku is what music concerts are called that play older types of music Food: -commonly eaten with chopsticks (hashi) -main foods are rice, fresh vegetables & small portions of meat, seafood and fruit -rice and tea are apart of most meals

Culture Lifestyle: -education is a main focus for children -jobs/careers are a main focus for adults Leisure: -comics called manga are read -Japanese TV. shows called animes are watched Manners: -taking shoes off before entering the house -being polite Religions: -The Buddhism religion place Buddha statues on their homes Buddha statue in Japan

  5. Culture Art: -haikus are poems about nature -woodblock printing (ukiyoe) has been around since the 17th century Literature: -calligraphy (shodo) is well respected Gender Issues: -in early Japan, women would stay and clean the house -now both men & women work Woodblock printing

  6. Culture Truth Family: -foundation of society -elder parents live in children’s homes -father is the head of the house Language: -bowing is said to show a lot of what the person is saying -nonverbal language is valued -Kanji is related to Chinese character God Energy Love Peace Music Sun

Government Structure: -Constitutional monarchy: monarch acts as head of state within the parameters of a written, unwritten, or blended constitution -Japan’s legislature is called Diet -242 seat for councilors of the upper house ; councilors are elected for 6 terms -480 house of representatives (lower house) ; elected for 4 terms -voting age is 20 Political Parties: • -democratic party of Japan or DPJ • -Japan communist party or JCP • -liberal democratic party or LDP • -Social Democratic Party or SDP Diet Building of Japan

Economy Currency: -called yen -the symbol for yen is : -100 yen=around 90 cents in U.S. currency Trade: -main exports are machinery and equipment, fuels, foodstuffs, chemicals, textiles, raw materials -main imports are motor vehicles, semiconductors, office machinery, chemicals -receives over $1,903,000 M from U.S. exports Per Capita Income: -$34,000 Gross Domestic Product: -$4,300,172,576,000 Major Industry (exports): -rice, seafood, motor vehicles, semiconductors, office machinery and chemicals National Debt: -around $966 trillion yen front back

Demographics Education: -taken seriously and considered a primary focus -primary school starts at age 6 and last 6 years -junior high starts at age 12 and lasts 3 years -high school is also 3 years long -public schools are free from ages 6-15 -at age 15 tuition is paid to continue high school education -private schools are for kids who don’t do well on standardized tests Typical Japanese classroom

Geography Physical Features: -Mount Fuji is 12,338 ft and is the highest elevation in Japan -area of 145,913 square miles Climate: -winters can be bitterly cold -tropical climate in the south -warm humid summers and mild National Boundaries: -japans four main islands are Honshu, Hokkaido, Kyushu, and Shikoku -surrounded by 4,000 smaller islands National Parks: • -Fuji-Hakone-Izu national park is located on Honshu island • Wildlife: • -national flower is the cherry blossom • -many varieties of fish and rice • Natural Resources: -number one natural resource is fish and mineral sources Mount Fuji Cherry Blossom
