  2. Menu What are Question Words? • Question words are words used in the formation of a question. • Werand wenboth ask about a person. Werasks about the subject, whereas • Wen asks about the direct object of the sentence. • Was asks about objects.

  3. Menu How and when to use Wer • Wer should be used when asking about the subject of the sentence. • For example, if you needed to ask “Who lives in Dresden?” you would ask “Wer wohnt in Dresden?” • Answer: Ich wohne in Dresden.

  4. Menu How and when to use Wen • Wen should be used when asking about the direct object of the sentence. • The answer will be in Akkusative • If you ask “Whom do you know?” you would ask “Wen kennst du?” • Answer: Ich kenne ihn.

  5. Menu How and when to use Was • Was is used to ask about inanimate objects, as opposed to werand wen which ask about people. • “What are you people buying?” • “Was kauft ihr?” • Answer: Wir kaufen einen Hund. • Using weror wenhere would translate to “Who or whom are you people buying?” You can see how this would be incorrect.
