History • •In 1895 the Latvian Union of Decorative Painters established the Decorative Painters School. • •1928 – 1944 the school’s title was “Vocational School of Latvia’s Decorative Painter Trade Promotion and Assistance Society.” • •1944 - 1946 - Riga Art Highschool; • On March 18, 1946, the school was named after Janis Rozentals, a prominent Latvian painter (1866 – 1916). The school’s full title was: • Janis Rozentals Riga Art Highschool

  4. The School is financed by the Ministry of Culture of Republic of Latvia • In education process follows the Law on Education and the Law on Vocational education of Republic of Latvia.

Mission • Provide secondary vocational education in art and preliminary vocational education in art • Providethe possibility to master secondary vocational education programs in art so that graduates are able to continue studies at university level schools • Educate qualified art professionals who posess theoretical knowledge and practical skills to be able to enter the job market

  6. Structure •     School has two components: • –  Janis Rozentals Riga Art High-school, which provides secondary vocational education • Children’s Art School, which provides preliminary vocational education and serves as a basis for entering the Janis Rozentals Riga Art High-school

Janis Rozentals Riga Art High-school • Two programs:Visual art and Visual Communications Art • 4years, i.e.secondary school grades 10, 11, 12 + 1 extra year • 134 students, aged 16 – 20 • Enrollment is by entrance exams • 36 students in each grade • 16 art teachers (full time), 7 (part time) • 6 full time general subjects teachers, 7 part time teachers

Janis Rozentals Riga Art High-school • Provides secondary vocational education, which consists of standard secondary school curriculum (math, language, history, etc.) in combination with art subjects. • 2 art programs: • Visual art: specialty – Illustrator • Visual communications art: Specialties are Multimedia Designer and Fine Art Photographer • European Quality Framework (EQL) level 4

Specialization • During the first 2 years all students take the same art classes • In the 3rd and 4th year students focus on the program they have selected, i.e. visual art or visual communications art (multimedia design, photography), • In the 4th year they create diploma work in their specialty

  12. Classes • 40 minutes long • Maximum 38 classes per week (Monday-Friday) for students under the age of 18 • Maximum 40 classes per week for students aged 18 and older • 60% are general subjects, 40% are art subjects

  13. School year • Starts on 1 September, ends on 28 June • 2 Semesters • Christmas break 25 December – 5 January • Summer practice is 1-28 June

  14. Evaluation • Grades are from 1(very, very bad) to 10 (outstanding) • At the end of semester students display their art works and are evaluated by a commission of art teachers • Grade 4 is the minimum for “pass”

  15. Children’s Art School • 105 pupils • 10 teachers • Grades 5 – 9 • Ages 11 – 16 • Art subjects only • Classes take place in the evening and on Saturdays
