DVES

The decision to either build a new school or renovate DVES is critical for addressing our district's future needs. A full renovation to match standards of nearby schools would cost approximately $16 million, while a new school is estimated at $23 million. Key considerations include the age of the existing building (1956), potential closure for renovations, and limited additional space. With an increasing student population and the potential for new land acquisition, this proposal aims to benefit DVES students while enhancing community property values and facilitating long-term growth in the district.

  1. DVES Build or Renovate? On DV Campus or New Site? Location? Do we even need another school?

Build or Renovate? • Full renovation to make DVES comparable to DDPS and SES approx. $16 million • New school approx. $23 million • Major drawbacks of renovation include: • age of building (1956) • probable closure for one full school year • still higher operating costs than a new, more efficient building • no additional field space

Build on DV campus or new site? • DV campus is approximately 54 acres • 1956 – 1 school (combined HS/MS) • 1970 – 2 schools (HS and MS) • 1987 – 3 schools (HS, MS and Elementary) • 2001 – 4 schools (2 HS, MS and Elem.) + field house • Other additions to HS/MS and D.O. • District Enrollment • 1987 – approx. 1,500 2013 – approx. 4,900 • Desire to decompress this campus • Desire to move elementary away from HS

  4. Location for a new school? • Search for large tract of land in the DVES attendance area • Many hours spent searching • Wiese property was not available • Our DD vacant lot isn’t applicable • Biondo property • Central location; on three-lane • Favorable initial responses

  5. Do we need a new school? • 1998 – 4,500 • 2000 – 4,700 (built DDPS) • 2006 – 5,700 • 2013 – 4,900 • We need 4 elementary schools • DVES is actually growing!

  6. Wiese Property in Matamoras • Seller wants land used for a good cause • Does NOT include Dervend Circle houses • Listed 50 of approx. 64 acres for $1.5 million • Great parcel – flat; out of the 100-year flood plain • School design will fit beautifully on this parcel • Space for a second school if needed in future • Will allow us to stay in PlanCon cycle • Approx. 8 buses

Summary – a Win-Win!!! • DVES students get a beautiful new school • Matamoras should see property values rise • DV sells Biondo property and saves money • Milford Township gets large parcel back on rolls • Biondo property could generate new jobs in area • DV campus gets decompressed • District has long-term plan for future growth
