  1. Technology and SMS- A symbiotic relationship Eagle Integrated Solutions January 2008

  2. Technology and SMS: A symbiotic relationship For today….. • SMS Philosophy • How can technology help? • Examples • Conclusion/Q&A

  3. An SMS “Culture” • A culture of “tough on issues” • Plan the work and work the plan • Prove it over and over while improving along the way • Engrain this in your organization

  4. Technology and SMS • Technology can help support SMS but cannot replace planning, training, evaluation, refinement, critique of how we manage the AOA • Technology must be flexible and customizable to allow for adoption at various airports & airfields • Technology must support integration of other data sources in order to create the greatest benefit

  5. Supporting SMS could include…… • Enhancing situational awareness • Reminding us of the our roles under certain conditions • Extrapolating trends and anomalies over time that we might not otherwise “see” • Scenario planning/rule based logic • Allow us to share critical data more quickly and efficiently

  6. Situational Awareness • Support Objectives • ARFF Response • Follow Me • Lead snow vehicle • An example: • SMS Goal-Response time needs to be 3 minutes Solution EagleEye™ DEVS

  7. SMS Goal- Effective FOD Recovery Solution: GIS, wireless communications and FOD detection system working together (YVR,PVD)

  8. Roles & Responsibilities SMS Goal: Reduce radio chatter to reduce confusion wrt to changing airfield conditions Solution: Use wireless comm’s & GIS to share Ops procedures (Calgary, El Paso)

  9. SMS Goal: Objectively and easily identify trends over time to allow for decision making Year to Date B/W Observations Sighting Control Strike Solution GIS and Data Analysis (GTAA) Solution GIS and Data Analysis (GTAA)

  10. SMS Goal- Utilize TP 312/FAR 139 requirements in everyday applications to ensure consistent inspections and follow-up Solution Imbed airfield rules and settings in AIROps™ application

  11. Sharing Data (Computer Aided dispatch at San Francisco International)

  12. Runway Condition Reporting: GPS/GIS systems allows operations to collect real-time pavement temperature and friction values, and make intelligence based decisions about where and when to apply de-icing/anti-icing chemical, remove rubber etc…… (Trenton AFB)

  13. Conclusion • SMS must become a “way of life” • This is hard work • Symbiotic relationship between technology that can support our ability to learn from, remind us of, show us where etc. things about our operation/approach on the AOA • From here we can continue to improve • The work should never end

  14. Are you up for the challenge?
