  1. Background • FHWA launched INVEST 1.0 in 2012 • Making highway projects more sustainable in the long run • INVEST contents were developed with input from state, local transportation agency, professional organizations such as AASHTO, AMPO, and ASCE

  2. What is INVEST 1.0? • It is self-evaluation tool • It identifies and recognizes above-and-beyond efforts • The tool considers the full lifecycle of projects

  3. Features of INVEST 1.0 Includes six different scorecards for evaluating projects based on type of project (basic and extended) and location (urban and rural) The scorecards assign point values to each sustainable best practice on the basis of relative impact on roadway sustainability • It contains a manual of goals and criteria for sustainable highway practices • Each criteria describes a particular practice, methods for implementing it, and sources to document practices

Who uses INVEST & Some Benefits • Transportation agencies, their consultants, and partners • To evaluate and aid the integration of sustainability into your transportation programs and projects • To evaluate or score projects using different scorecards based on project type and location • To evaluate and score programs and practices related to operations and maintenance or system planning

  5. Benefits of Using INVEST 1.0? • To track the performance of projects or programs over time (MAP-21 performance measures) • To find one or two sustainability criteria that apply to projects • A resource to learn about how others are addressing sustainability/comprehensive planning and project deliver

Benefits of Using INVEST 1.0 • To demonstrate a commitment to sustainability to external audiences • To quantify sustainability to support decision making • To browse sustainable highway best practices and criteria • To learn about sustainability principles and the FHWA Sustainable Highway Initiative

  11. What is FHWA’s Stance on INVEST & the GA Division’s Role? The goals of INVEST do not replace FHWA’s other goals, priorities, or policies INVEST is intended to complement and support many of FHWA’s existing programs The Division will provide outreach, education, and training opportunities to GDOT, the MPOs, and local officials upon request

  12. Status of Georgia & INVEST GDOT demonstration state during the development of INVEST 1.0 The Division has been outreaching to the Office of Planning and GDOT’s upper managements Piloting INVEST with Valdosta (small) & Augusta (TMA) MPO

  13. Next Steps?Piloting INVEST • 2012 Solicitation for INVEST Implementation Program & Projects • Will work with MPO for INVEST implementation Program & Projects • Training/INVEST demonstration & use • MPOs currently in the early stages of LRTP update • Starting early August
