  1. Rocky Shores Sean D. A rocky shore consists of rocky ledges with pools of salty water, boulders, pebbles and other non-living things such as air and sunlight. They are located on steep coasts where plates have converged to form rocky cliffs.

  2. Location • Rocky shores are located all over the world in places where land meets water • In the US, most of the West Coast consists of rocky shores • No world map of rocky shores exists at the moment

  3. Abiotic Charactersitics • Physical: • Rocky shores are made up of large rocks/boulders, small pebbles, pools, and cliffs/ledges • Due to the constant rising/lowering of the tides within the rocky shore’s three zones, temperature and weather drastically change throughout the course of the day, ranging from dry and sunny to wet and dark • Chemical: • Salinity is a constantly changing characteristic of the rocky shores • The mid-littoral zone and littoral fringe (a.k.a. the intertidal zone) fluctuate in salinity depending upon previous rainfalls and tide levels, as rain can lead to dilution, and sun exposure can lead to evaporation

  4. Producers/Consumers • The base of the food chain is the sun • Plankton and algae get their energy from the sun by photosynthesis • Filter feeders eat decomposed plants and animals • Plankton and algae are then eaten by herbivores, which are eaten by carnivores • The carnivores are at the top of the food chain • Larger carnivores then eat these smaller carnivores

  5. Invertebrates • Sea star/brittle star • Hermit crab • Barnacle • Limpet • Periwinkle • Prawn

  6. Vertebrates • Herring Gull • Common Blenny

  7. Cool Facts • Couldn’t find any cool facts about rocky shores

  8. Human Impact • Rocky shores face multiple threats from humans: • Pollution – Can be carried to the coasts by rivers, can enter from the ocean, and can be left by people who relax at the beach • Fishing – Rocky shores and tidal pools are over-fished, and bait bags and fishing line can be left on the shores • Trampling – Increasing numbers of sightseers and naturalists has led to trampling from foot traffic • Oil Spills – One of the most destructive forms of human impact upon rocky shores

  9. Related Links • Life on the Rocky Shore - Provides good information on tide pools and tide pool animals • Rocky Shore - Has good info regarding tidal zones and human impact upon rocky shores • Rocky Intertidal Habitats - More info about human impacts and descriptions of zones • A Rocky Seashore Ecosystem - Excellent info regarding the food chain of rocky shore life • The Biological Sciences - Rocky Shores - More in-depth information about rocky shores
