  1. Team Concept Proposal Team MIEUX – ASME Design Competition September 16, 2004 Stefan Campbell Carlos Celada Chris Villani Laurel Weiske TEAM MIEUX

  2. Key Features • Counterbalance • Mechanical assistance for stair ascension • Stabilizer • Prevents tipping during ascension • Provides support during raising and turning • Chassis • Geometrically shaped for stair climbing • Grain Storage Unit • Located in body • Electromagnetic latch Battery Weight Grain Storage Unit Counterbalance Stabilizer TEAM MIEUX

  3. Vehicle enters raised position and drives forward Vehicle drives forward Counterbalance rotates backward Counterbalance rotates forward Vehicle climbs stair Vehicle proceeds on higher stair Stair Ascension TEAM MIEUX

  4. Skid Steering • Vehicle enters raised position • Left and right wheels powered independently • Rear stabilizers have low traction—do not impede turning • Path • Two 90° turns—one right, one left • Reverses down stairs TEAM MIEUX

  5. Controls • One control for right rear wheel and front wheels • One for left rear wheel • One for counterbalance rotation • One for rice discharge (simple button release) • Rice Discharge • Electromagnetic Releases • Rice discharged from upright position • Platform between stabilizers act as a “rice chute” TEAM MIEUX

  6. Design Considerations for Trade Studies • Chassis Geometry • Chassis must clear steps without contact • Geometry of grain container—must mesh with chassis • Counterbalance • Angle of rotation • Weight • Length • Motor requirements (will a linkage be required?) • Motors • Torque requirements • Weight limitations • Power Requirements • Power distribution • Battery choices – rechargeable/alkaline • Controls • Umbilical vs. RC—price/practicality • Automation of certain tasks TEAM MIEUX
