  8. The Office of Research Services 1. Support and facilitate research by: • Effectively communicating research funding opportunities in a timely manner • Assisting with research applications (pre-award) and administration (post-award) • Negotiating standard research agreements, sub-awards and MOUs • Seeking opportunities to improve or renew research infrastructure (e.g., CFI) 2. Support to the Senate Research Committee and research ethics committees 3. Develop and implement research policies consistent with the accountability standards set out in the Tri-Council Policy MOU (http://www.nserc.ca/institution/mou_e.htm) 4. Connect faculty members with potential research sponsors 5. Support and administer Post-doctoral fellows and Visiting Scholars 6. Facilitate establishment of Research Chairs (e.g., Canada Research Chairs Program and Lakehead University Research Chairs program) 7. Promote research and its impact to our external community

Postdoctoral Fellows and Visiting Scholars • Postdoctoral Fellows and Visiting Scholars are an integral part of the University community who can contribute significantly to the institutional mission. • Post-doctoral fellows and Visiting Scholars must officially registerwith the Office of the Vice-President (Research, Economic Development and Innovation). Regulatory Requirements Affecting Research Research Ethics Board Animal Care Committee Biosafety Committee Radiation Safety Committee Tri-Council MOU Statement regarding Institutions’ responsibilities related to regulatory requirements: “. . . establish and maintain effective policies, systems, procedures and controls to ensure–prior to the release of research funds–compliance with all conditions and regulatory certification requirements with respect to research involving humans, animals and biohazards. . . . “

  15. Research Ethics What is human research ethics? Standards of conduct that investigators/researchers are ethically bound to honour in order to protect their research participants from physical or psychological harm At Lakehead University all research with human subjects must adhere to the ethical guidelines outlined in the Tri-Council Policy Statement. The three Councils will only consider funding to individuals and institutions who certify that they comply with this Policy!

Research Ethics Board The Research Ethics Board is responsible for ensuring that all research involving human subjects undergoes ethical review before the research commences. • This includes research from faculty members, graduate students, and all human subject research that occurs on campus. • Number one priority is to ensure the protection of research participants.

  17. What requires clearance? • All research involving human participants • This includes asking people to complete a written survey, conducting an interview or focus group, administering a test, or a treatment for research purposes

Your proposal is complete…what is my next step and what are the timelines? • Send, drop off or email one (1) copy to the Office of Research Services, attention Research Ethics Board • A preliminary review is conducted • Proposal is sent to the REB for review • Response is issued in 2-3 weeks for minimal risk projects

  20. Remember… Always get REB approval before beginning your research with human subjects! There is no retroactive process.

  21. Existing approval from another institution? • Requires approval from the Lakehead University Research Ethics Board • Can submit existing ethics application from another institution with the signed Researchers Agreement Form and TCPS2 Tutorial Certificate

  23. Animal Care Committee • The Committee’s role is to ensure that all animal care and experimentation at Lakehead University is conducted within the guidelines of the Canadian Council on Animal Care and the Animals for Research Act. • Animal Utilization Protocol forms must be completed for all animal use including research, teaching, testing, and field studies, and submitted to the Committee for approval. Health and Safety Regulations The Office of Human Resources is responsible for the administration of the Health and Safety Program for the University, which includes the following research related Committees: • Biosafety Program Researchers wishing to work biohazardous materials must make an application to the Lakehead Biosafety Committee and meet standards set by Health Canada and Lakehead University • Radiation Program Researchers wishing to work with Radiation materials must make an application to the Lakehead Radiation Safety Committee – process is similar to Biosafety Program • Labs and Studios Workplace Joint Health and Safety Committee responsible for inspection of laboratory spaces on campus to meet Provincial regulations and standards Any students working on research projects require Health and Safety Training must have that training arranged by their supervisor through the Office of Human Resources.   29. SSHRC Upcoming Competitions • Insight Grants– deadline: October 15, 2012 (internal deadline of October 1, 2012). Funding is available to both emerging and established scholars for long-term research initiatives of three to five years. No special category for new scholars. NOI must have been submitted by August 15, 2012. • Insight Development Grants - Deadline: February 1, 2013. Insight Development Grants support research in its initial stages. The maximum value of an Insight Development Grant is $75,000 over one to two years. In the previous competitions, at least 50% of funds were reserved for applications from new scholars. • Partnership Development Grants (application deadline November 30, 2012) • Partnership Grants (LOI deadline February 15, 2013) • Connection Grants (no deadline) • Connection Grants support events and outreach activities geared toward short-term, targeted knowledge mobilization initiatives. SSHRC Insight Grant Workshop to be held September 13 @ 10:00am (ATAC 3004; Orillia Faculty can participate in the session via video conference by going to OA 2005)

  30. NSERC Upcoming Critical Dates • Discovery Grants – deadline: November 1, 2012 (internal deadline: October 18, 2012). Form 180 was due August 1 (mandatory). • Research Tools and Instruments Grants – deadline: October 25, 2012 (internal deadline: October 11, 2012). • Strategic Project Grants – deadline: anticipated to be April 15, 2012. • Engage and Interaction Grants – deadline (apply at any time). NSERC information session for Discovery Grant applicants (by video conference): Thursday, September 6, 2012 from in AT5035 (OA 1025 in Orillia)@1:30.

Canada Foundation for InnovationLeaders Opportunity Fund The Leaders Opportunity Fund (LOF) is designed to help universities attract and retain the very best of today’s and tomorrow’s researchers at a time of intense international competition. To this end, the LOF offers universities the opportunity to: • acquire infrastructure for their leading research faculty to undertake cutting-edge research; • create competitive packages of research support in the form of infrastructure; • Attract additional infrastructure investments from suppliers and other partner organizations.

  32. Canada Foundation for InnovationLeaders Opportunity Fund (LOF) • Priority is given to New Faculty and CRC’s; all disciplines eligible • Priority is given to interdisciplinary teams and shared infrastructure proposals within priority areas identified in the University’s Strategic Research Plan • Funding Formula (40% CFI, 40% ORF, 20% researchers and other partners) • Average Grant at LU - $171,201 (CFI 40% portion) • Internal call for proposals to be released September 2012.

Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships Program • Provides awards to the very best postdoctoral researchers, both nationally and internationally (two-year fellowships, worth $70,000/year (taxable) for a total award of $140,000).   • Deadline: November 1, 2012. • Lakehead is offering a voluntary internal peer review process for this competition:  please contact the Office of Research Services no later than September 2, 2012 if interested.  Complete applications would need to be submitted to the Office of Research Services no later than October 2, 2012.

  34. Early Researcher Award • The Ministry of Economic Development and Innovation’s Early Researcher Award (ERA) program helps promising, recently-appointed Ontario researchers build their research teams of undergraduates, graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, research assistants, associates, and technicians. The goal of the program is to improve Ontario’s ability to attract and retain the best and brightest research talent. • Each award to a leading researcher is a maximum of $100,000 and must be matched by an additional $50,000 from the researcher’s institution and/or a partner organization. Internal competition is held for grants requesting university matching funds. • The funds are to be used over a period of up to five years to fund eligible expenses for a research team of undergraduates, graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, research assistants, associates, and technicians. Competition not yet announced for this year.

Working with the Media • The media often calls upon researchers to share their expertise • Researchers make important contributions through their work that impacts society every day.  Help us tell your success story! • In responding to a media opportunity, faculty obtain greater public awareness of their achievements and the University receives recognition and an enhanced reputation for the impact of its research and scholarly efforts • Remember, you are the expert. If you are unsure about something, let the journalist know and promise to get back with an answer right away or refer him/her to another faculty member who might be more qualified to answer that question.
