  2. The role of the non-licensed assistant • You are an important part of the health care team. • You work under the supervision of a nurse. • You will be performing tasks and procedures that meet the patients hygiene, safety, comfort, nutrition, exercise and elimination needs.

  3. The role of the non-licensed assistant • Role limitations Never give medications. Never take oral or telephone orders from a doctor. Never tell a patient or their family a diagnosis or discuss a treatment plan. Never diagnose or prescribe treatments or drugs to anyone. Never supervise or train another non-licensed assistant. Do not do anything that is outside your job description.

  4. The role of the non-licensed assistant • Delegation is defined as the means to authorize another person to perform a task. The person must be competent to perform the task in a given situation. • Who can delegate? • RN’s can delegate to LPN’s, NA’s, AUA’s and HUC’s • LPN’s can delegate to NA’s, AUA’s and HUC’s. • NA’s, AUA’s and HUC’s can not delegate.

  7. Professional Appearance • Good hygiene. • Uniforms that are clean and fit well. Are modest in in length and style. • Wear a clean uniform daily. • Wear your name badge at all times while on duty. • Cover tattoos. • Do not wear jewelry in pierced eyebrows, nose, lip or tongue while on duty. • Other jewelry should be keep to a minimum. Do not wear anything that might scratch a patient.

  8. Professional Appearance • Wear a wristwatch with a second hand • Wear shoes that are clean and fit properly. • Keep fingernails short, clean and neatly shaped. Do not wear fake nails. • Keep hair off away from your face. • Use makeup that is modest in amount and color. • Do not wear perfume, cologne or aftershave. • Do use deodorant

  9. Be a team player • Attributes of a team player • Report to work on time and when scheduled. • Be ready to work when your shift starts. • Have a good attitude. • Do not gossip. • Maintain confidentiality of the patient and your co-workers. • Watch your language • Be polite and courteous.

  10. Setting priorities • When you get your assignment you need to prioritize your care for the day. • When prioritizing your care based on your patients needs and procedures.
