  1. Lecture 8: “House” on Faith

  2. Themes • “Faith is not an argument.” • If people lie then trust is useless.

  3. Discussion Patient: When the doctors said that she had two months to live, that is when I made a bargain.. House: With your health insurance carrier? Patient: With God, that I will nail my self to a cross every year he kept her alive. House: So how did that negotiation go, you low balled with ear piercing and God countered? Patient: Three weeks later she was cancer free. And that was fouryears ago. House: Pontius Pilate, misunderstood the oncologist! Patient: My wife thinks I am crazy too. She moved out the first time I did this. House: At least your daughter has one viable role model. Daughter (Melissa): You do not believe in God. House: I did and then I grew my curly hairs. Daughter (Melissa): So how do you think I was cured? House: Maybe you were misdiagnosed in the first place. Patient: You have your answers doctor, we have ours. House: Causal determinism, we are hard wired to need answers. The cave man who heard a rustle in the bushes to check out what it was lived longer than the one who just assumed it was a breeze. The problem is when we do not find a logical answer we settle for a stupid one, which is what happens when we run out of rational ones. Other doctor: If you are done mocking him. WE need to prepare for an LP House: Good! Put another hole in him! That willreally make God’s day!

  4. Patient:Who is that? • House:God. • House: You broke your deal with him. Your daughter is fine and you are fine. Nothing bad happened. It could only mean one thing. There is no God. Of course if your daughter gets hit by a meteorite I will have serious egg on my face. • House: Your smiling, I assume that means you are miserable • Patient: It means I am happy. This does not mean that God does not exist. It means he is truly merciful. My beautiful Melissa was right. God is all about love. • House: Punishment is proof of God and no punishment is proof of God. Ingenious argument. • Patient: Nah..Faith is not an argument.. I would like to see my daughter...

  5. Discussion • What can you say about the statement, “Faith is not an argument?” • What are the issues or challenges we face in believing in God as seen in the episode? • Can you identify with any of the characters in the episode? Why?
