  2. Facts • Highest Court in NSW • Operates under Supreme Court Act (1970) and the Civil Procedure Act (2005) • Was established by the Charter of Justice in 1823.

Inside the Court • There are 48 judges, 4 associate judges. • Highly experienced solicitors and barristers. • Their title is “The Honourable Justice”. • They are referred to as “Your Honour” in court. • Associate judges deal with trials not involving a jury. • Consists of a Chief Justice, and a number of senior judges (Justices). Who are appointed by the Governor. Chief Justice Spigelman

Cases • Civil Cases involving amounts of money over $750, 000, involving contracts and torts, equity, probate, admiraltyand commercial. • Serious Criminal cases (indictable offences) involving Murder, Treasonand Piracy. • Also deal with matters under Commonwealth laws. • Hear appeals from lower courts.
