Texas NAACP 1912: First chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People was formed in Houston Purpose: To end laws that kept African Americans from voting Main court case victories: Smith v. Allwright: In 1944, Supreme court ruled that white primaries are illegal Sweatt v. Painter: In 1950, Supreme Court ruled that a Texas law school had to admit African Americans

  4. Lula Bell Madison White1907-1957 Born in Elmo, Texas President of the Houston chapter of the NAACP. Devoted her life to the struggle against Jim Crow laws in Texas. Campaigned for the right to vote, equal pay for equal work, and for desegregation of public facilities for African Americans.

James Farmer1920-1999 Born in Marshall, Texas. 1942 – He founded the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) an organization that sought to bring an end to racial segregation in the U.S. through nonviolence protests such as freedom rides, sit-ins and boycotts Trivia: His life is portrayed in the movie The Great Debaters

Barbara Jordan1936-1996 Houston native 1967-First African American elected to the Texas Senate after Reconstruction. 1973-First southern black female elected to the U.S. House of Representatives.
