  3. Warm-Up Essay • Why do wars start? Is fighting ever justified? Is revenge? If so, when?

  4. Life and Death of Grendel • Fill out the charts that depict Grendel’s life. Use lines from the text to mark key points in Grendel’s life. You will need at least 6 points. The first one has been provided for you and is from lines 1-5.

  5. Maternal Instinct • What are the qualities of a good mother (or any guardian)? (Link Organizer) • Tell of a time when someone protected you from harm (a role model, parent, or guardian).

  6. Victory! • The Danes celebrate the victory of Beowulf • Joy and feasting • Men and women in the hall gaily dressed

Scop After Beowulf killed Grendel, one of Hrothgar’s thanes stepped forward: “A minstrel mindful of saga and lay./ He wove his words in a winding pattern,/ Hymning the burden of Beowulf’s feat,/ Clothing the story in skillful verse” • The scop composed poetry in oral form before the audience. • Shaped the words to fit the occasion (people usually already knew the story). • Was capable of reading and writing. • Form of verse was direct, flexible • Caesura-breaks in lines (2 half lines) • Word-hoard-helped to compose poetry on the spotwords had different connotations. • Boern (bear), freca (wolf), wiga (fighter) all meant warrior • Alliteration • Kenning-Compound word used as a metaphore • Beowulf-shield-bearer • Sun-candle in heaven

Troll Wife Attack • Grendel’s mother kills Hrothgar’s closest friend (Aeshere) and takes back Grendel’s arm. • Glazed over in the text, which is unfortunate. • What is the significance of what Grendel’s mother did? • People came to see Grendel and to hear of the tale • Hosts of women and men gaily dressed in the hall

  9. Fill out an Analysis Chart: Agree or Disagree • Was Grendel’s mother right in doing what she did? • Why or why not? • You do not need to fill out every section of the form, but simply use it to guide your thoughts.
